1st drive vs NCS compared to the other drives

I wasn't able to watch the entire game (thankfully, in retrospect), but we looked pretty good on that first drive where we scored our only TD. Running game looked pretty good. DJ threw some good balls. And then it fell apart. What was the difference? Did NCS change their defense after that drive? Did we change our offense? Or did we just all of a sudden suck again?

That was the second drive.
The first drive stalled, but if Shipley had been able to pull in the little pass DJ flipped to him on third down, the first drive could have been productive.

Flipped is a softer word than I would have used.
Words I used while watching the broadcast included: rifled, buzzed, slung, etc.
Though you are correct that it seemed Shipley had some space had the connection been made.

Take your choice of answers: S)We hit an iceberg!(The Titanic) U)We blew up as we were landing( The Hindenburg) C)They regrouped, and hit as from all 4 sides( The Alamo) K)They had more Indians then we had soldiers( Custer's Last Stand). That should answer your question.

DJ was out of the pocket and not scared for his life. The question is why didn't we continue to move him out of the pocket?

I have wondered that too.
Why not more rollouts with two options or a throw away pass or run for 1-3 yards? It does limit the side of the field but it also makes an easier read.
HB screens may work too. Jumbo Fisher is the best play caller for HB screens I’ve ever seen. May be worth studying some different tendencies to help out our o-like and keep teams from blitzing us as much. That way we can run up the middle better.

We ran a HB screen and Ross couldn't make it to his block.
Shipley got tackled by his shoe string.
The guy who tackled Shipley was the only NC State in the screen for what looked to be 25 yards.
Would have been a MASSIVE play if Ross got to his man and even bumped him a little.

I remember this play. Great example of what the coaches are referring to when they mention being close, just need to execute. For that play, I’d say that’s a fair assessment.
Unfortunately, it feels like when I’m watching, for every one of these type plays, where fans and the team alike can clearly see it was a good play and 1 player didn’t quite execute, there are many, many more than are blown up/doomed from the snap.
We wouldn’t have all the 3&outs if we were truly a few plays/inches away. We’d have stalled drives in the red zone, too many FGs instead of TDs, 300-400 yards of offense, etc. If so many fans realize this, the players do too. I really hope whatever messages the coaches are delivering in practice are not being undermined by what they’re saying publicly.
