BV may leave

But Clemson isn’t going anywhere. Clemson will remain the same regardless of those in charge. Do you honestly believe that our football program will be destroyed if a coach leaves for another challenge? Ain’t gonna happen,
BV is a solid college football coach but he is NOT Clemson!
Remember how some were overly concerned when Clemson hired an unknown assistant named Swinney as head coach? That worked out real well.
I bet there is a DC out there who can’t wait to become a part of my university.

Same thing with LSU they had a 21 point surge in the 2nd Qtr so don’t give me that “defense was gassed” crap. Some people go above and beyond to criticize one coordinator and make excuses for the other.

No they weren’t. We were up 17-7 on LSU and then the defense gave up touchdowns on 3 straight drives. We were up 14-7 on Ohio State and the defense started bleeding points. We scored a touchdown on our first possession in the 2nd half and the defense immediately gave up a touchdown of their own.

Tiger fan you’re wrong . Defense cost us the past 2 playoffs. Offense could’ve done better. But our d allowed too many points. Bottom line

I agree and think Bates will do okay since he has been under BV and knows the system. The big problem is the elephant in the room. Our QB isn't even ranked in the top 100. Think about that. We have to deal with that problem. Also, I'm not a TE fan and think we could improve in that area. Why don't we address the most critical problems first and then worry about the DC. Bates can handle it next year.

Well stated ST.
BV has been our best position coach/coordinator in my memory since 1979. He will be missed. Oklahoma is a landing spot he has earned.

Dec 5, 2021, 2:07 PM

He’s on record as saying he WILL use the portal IN THE FUTURE when there is an OPPORTUNITY and a NEED.
So, how exactly has his reticence concerning the portal last year hurt Clemson so far?
Name some specific players.

When TP tore his Achilles we were down to a walk on as 2nd string. Of course, no one knew DJ was going to struggle like he did, but we absolutely needed quality depth at that position.

just waiting to transfer and sit behind a 5-star QB who was doing Dr. Pepper commercials?
And speak from a July perspective, not a December point of view.
So ... who did he miss on, and why would that guy have transferred to Clemson, and how would he have made us a better team?

I don't think we missed on anybody
Dec 5, 2021, 2:33 PM

because I don't think we even looked. I feel confident that there was at least one qb in the portal that would have jumped at the chance to play at clemson. Again. at that point (July), there was literally no depth at QB. Any D1 prospect would have been beneficial. That's just my opinion. Maybe you're right. Maybe no QB in the portal would have come to Clemson.

I’m sure “some QB” would have come to Clemson. But
Dec 5, 2021, 2:39 PM
|
|
what difference would it have made?
“Some QB” was not going to be a difference maker.
Last summer, it was the total consensus that if DJ were lost to injury, the season was pretty much shot.
I just disagree that jumping into the portal for another warm body at QB was necessary last July.
I’m willing to see how Dabo operates with the portal going forward.

People said Clemson wouldn't be as good on offense without Chad Morris. Clemson went to 6 straight ACC Championships and CFP appearances without him. They can do the same without Brent. Remember when Clemson got him to leave Oklahoma their fans weren't even upset about it. Maybe the culture and players make a bigger difference than the coaching X and O's?

That had more to do with Tajh Boyd, Lawrence and Bryant than Morris. Any OC would look good with those guys.

We Deshaun and Trevor covered up a lot of sins.
Neither of the inherited OCs ever had to get really creative in those roles and Streeter never had to do much more than recruit. That showed up this year.
When a TE offense and undisciplined QBs/WRs in a pass-centric offense can’t bail out our defense, our Defense will flounder under anyone currently on staff — BV mentored or otherwise.

this is the delusional side of our fan base that thinks we really have become Alabama.
We found a magic combination for a few years and they were glorious. We will remember them fondly.
They're over now, and the sooner you come to grips with that the happier you will be as a Clemson fan.

I’ve been around for the good times and the bad. One major difference this time is we still have our head coach and we are a national brand now. If Dabo chooses to bring someone in, there will be a bunch of high quality folks with interest. BV is the man no doubt, but there are plenty of great candidates out there. I hope we don’t promote from within personally. My biggest concern is BV’s loss as a recruiter.

what we've seen in the past. Struggling to make a bowl game or win the division on a regular basis is a thing of the past.
However, anyone who thinks we're just going to pick right up and be back in playoff contention after losing the best defensive coordinator in school history (and one of the best ever, period) is simply fooling themselves.
And that's before we know what the fallout is with recruits on the defensive side of the ball.

Agree that we should be fine. Clemson will be Clemson but an elite football program is not a birthright. The coach, particularly the head coach, matters immensely.
Clemson was still Clemson with Hatfield, West and Bowden. Great coaches like Dabo are rare and we are fortunate he is here and “bloomed where he was planted.”
