A former player told me that he was fornicating with a Rally Cat and his wife told him that she was leaving town with or without him. I don’t know if that’s true but the guy who told me that said there was no doubt.

I’ve heard the rumors, too, but I refuse to participate in ruining someone’s reputation without definitive proof. Often rumors tend to be greatly exaggerated if not outright false.
Plus, there’s been nothing I’ve heard of that nature before he came to Clemson or in the many years since, so that sort of thing would seem to be out of character for him.
What Barnes said was he wanted to coach at a school that had the chance to win the national championship. He didn’t think Clemson offered him that opportunity. That’s what he said, so that’s what I’ll believe.

Just wish he would have been honest at the time of his departure instead of throwing shade at the education system in SC. With what he was making in the mid-90's he could easily afford to send his children to the best private schools available yet he took a shot at education in SC on his way out instead of just saying he wanted to go somewhere where he didn't have to play (at best) 3rd banana to UNC and Duke.

You’re right. I had forgotten about that. Barnes did bash our education system, which was not very gracious on his part for sure. Sounded like a little bitterness for whatever reason.

I know a huge booster for Clemson and he said there was absolutely nothing credible about Barnes and Rally Cat rumors.

I remember when he was coaching Coastal Carolina and came back to play Clemson. They were honoring him for something - sorry, it's Monday and it's the afternoon - and he bent down and kissed the Paw on the court.

I liked Cliff. IMO, he did what a mens basketball coach needs to do to be a success at Clemson and generate fan enthusiasm. Every couple of years field an ACC upper echelon team that is capable of winning some tournament games. Of course, the ACC is a shell of what is was in the 80's so being upper echelon does not mean what it used to.
Barnes, even though I did not like the way he left, was the best overall BB coach I have ever seen at CU.

Purnell had a unique system of pressuring the ball all over the floor the entire ball game. He overachieved with his recruits.

Yeah apparently Brad is such a defensive coach apparently. But he never uses full court pressure like Purnell. Or do it successfully like Purnell.
It is also about just more hustling from Purnell’s teams as well.

Are ungrateful jerks. They live to bash Clemson basketball and the ACC. Aren’t smart enough to realize what they got. If they get what they want at the end of the season, Clemson basketball will return to its glory days in the basement of the “weak” ACC. Hopefully, CBB will shut them up.

Purnell took over a program that was absolutely terrible and in 3 years had em playing in the NIT champ… then made 3 straight tourneys and played in the acc champ game in an ACC that was WAY more difficult and that’s not even debatable. And he had some really bad breaks with matchups in the ncaa tourney and other stuff like TO getting kicked out of the game in the first few minutes… not trying to crap on BB just saying OP took over a bad program and had them def trending up more year after year and made it 3 times in 7 years with absolutely nothing to work with the first couple years… Brad took over that program in good shape and has made it the same amount in 14 years ! Purnell is by far so far been the better coach I’m sure in most eyes… BB has a chance to change that for sure this year and the teams he is building.

Rick Barnes is probably the best BB coach Clemson has had in the last 27 years. Shyatt was a joke, and Purnell was Brad Brownell today. I'm not a Gamecocks fan, but USC is 21-5 in the SEC and 9-4 in a tough conference. They could make some noise in the NCAAs. Clemson may have beaten them early in the year, but they're better than the Tigers now.

Liked some of Cliff Ellis’ teams but didn’t really like him so much personally. And I agree with those who mentioned Bill Foster.
No votes for Tates Locke? I know Clemson basketball hasn’t exactly had a stellar history, but I think he started us down the path to relevancy. (No, I’m not his son.)

“Foster took us to the final 8…”
Please forgive my laziness in not looking it up, and I’m old so forgive my memory, too. But didn’t that shot from the corner with 1 second on the clock send UCONN to the final 8 over us? Nevertheless, Foster was a good coach and a good guy.

Press had personality. Our current coach has zero personality. That is why he cannot recruit. No one wants to play for an overweight guy with a crew cut. Brad has no insight of how to be a high profile coach or how to elevate his public perception. He seldom out coaches anyone. That is very obvious.

He was 60-60 his last four years here. He never finished higher than 7th in an 8-9 member ACC.
We had no NCAA berths those four years, and made two NITs when it was easy to get into - you basically list needed a winning overall record.
Those mediocre last few years were despite future NBA talent in Sharone Wright, Chris Whitney, and Devin Gray. Talk about doing less with more!

Check the number of ACC drafted and nba players from those years and compare it to today. Even with more teams.

Tates Locke. I liked Barnes as he was a very good coach but it was clear he only used Clemson to get the next opportunity.

Tie between Barnes and Purnell.
Barnes hard nosed tough defenses and Purnells Diamond Full Court Pressure of athletes who played very hard. Two times Clemson made three straight NCAAT with both coaches. Only time it happened. Could have been special if could kept them..

1. Barnes - best coach we've had in hoops 2. Ellis - recruited great big men 3. Purnell - fast paced and fun to watch

Bill Foster... I know, not the most popular choice! He was a Williamsburg county boy , born in Hemingway. He and my dad were good friends, and I had the opportunity to get to know him. He did take us to our only Elite 8!

Took us to our first ACC tournament wins and final. Didn't have near the talent UNC and Duke did that year.

Tates Locke by far. Did not say he was the most successful nor the greatest offensive strategist. I know how all the players arrived but he managed to coach/corral the likes of Tree, Colon Abraham, Stan Rome, and the one and only Skip Wise - on the same team. There was a lot of outside stuff to manage but dad gum, Skip Wise was light years ahead of anyone Clemson had ever seen or will see. That's first team All Conference as a Freshman. Yes, I thoroughly enjoyed watching Tates coach a game and the atmosphere at that point in Littlejohn was a lot of fun.

Winningest coach in our program’s history, including best ACC winning percentage and most NCAA Tournament wins in program history. Runs a clean program, graduates his players, and represents our program well.
He also loves Clemson and is devoted to the program, unlike Rick Barnes and Oliver Purnell.

Purnell, then Barnes.
Purnell teams were always competitive. Good recruiting. Just couldn’t hit free throws.
Barnes teams were good. Made the sweet sixteen. Just couldn’t hit free throws.

I'm from Bill Foster's era and I really liked him. Nice family and had a gift for finding big men (like Nance & Grant) that other schools overlooked. He had a strong overall record even if conference play was tough against the Dean, Terry Holland, Lefty, and that new guy at Duke with the unpronounceable name.

Not my favorite, but most memorable - Tates Locke - because I was a kid and went to a lot of games in LJ and the trio of Skip Wise, Tree Rollins, and Stan Rome was fun to watch. My dad liked Tates Locke because Locke was Bobby Knight before Bobby Knight (At West Point, HC Locke hired Knight as an AC).
