Pollsters and how they determine pre-season rankings.

They do just like fans. "How good were they last year?" And, that heavily weighs on how good they think they will be this year.

Clemson lost three games last year. Clemson had a weak OL. Clemson had problems at WR. Therefore....

Writers and other "experts" don't take, or even have, the time to carefully analyze several teams (much less 30 or 40 teams to figure out who the top 25 are). They rely on
1. Last year's record
2. Reputation

(Example, reputation was why FSU was overrated in the 2015-2020 years. I'm pretty sure we were preseason top 20 the first year Willie Taggart was coach, maybe even the second year.)

(Example, Alabama doesn't know who their starting QB will be. But, they are Bama so they are ranked high. TCU played in the national championship game last year, but they have no reputation to fall back on, so they are ranked low.)

This is even more true of fans.

"We blew 'em out last year. We'll do it again this year."
"They had no receivers last year, so they will have no receivers this year."
"Their DBs sucked last year, so they will suck this year."

(Note - those comments are not specifically about what fans are saying about Clemson. They are just generic comments fans make in August about any team.)

My generic comments are:
1. Don't underestimate Clemson.
2. Don't underestimate FSU.

Both will be better than they were last year, probably significantly better.

Who is underestimating FSU or Clemson? FSU is in about every preseason top 10 list I've seen and Clemson is also on many of them.

You must not be reading all of the "why FSU will dethrone Clemson" articles, the ESPN talking heads and many of the prognosticators who think this season will be just more of the same for Clemson (at least 3 losses).

There are lots of comments on how Clemson has peaked and is now on the decline. I'm fine with it because I think we will use it as motivation and if we stay healthy, we are going to be serving up a lot of crow to some folks.

I'm sure there's some of that talk, based on how Clemson's season ended. But talk about how FSU may dethrone Clemson is hardly underrating FSU.

I hope FSU beats a mud hole in LSU and then stomps is dry.

Sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together.

Not sure why football fans in 2023 put any credence (or spend any time reading) into pre-season polls. The only rankings that matter are the committee rankings in November. That's it. Period.

Most pollsters have a bias.

They have favorite teams (conferences) and look for reasons to boost their team's (conference's) position.

Those involved in broadcasting will boost a team's rankings if that team is playing one of their favorites. Clemson started one of Dabo's early seasons ranked #8 or 9 because we played Bama in our first game. It was embarrassing to Clemson fans but ESPiN thoroughly enjoyed having its best team in its network partner conference destroy an opponent.

Clemson hasn't finished our retribution to ESPiN and the Bama/SEC yet.

And then there are guys like Bill Connolly

that put hundreds or even thousands of hours into creating a model that accounts for as many things as possible and they still get sh*t on by most people because they don't agree with the rankings.
