No excuse to have so few people there, even in a December game against a low level opponent. Our team deserves better than this.

I agree. For what ever reason, CLEMSON fans just don't care and the football team was there today also. Wish I had the answer. After last night I can't imagine a real CLEMSON fan living near CLEMSON not to be at this game. Sickening

should have stayed in Greenville....

Clemson has known this since the 60's
but people just won't accept it.
You can get 80k to travel for a day basically to see a 3.5 hour football game,
but you're not going to get a steady diet of 10k to travel AT NIGHT
to see a 2 hour basketball game -
no matter how good we are.
People need to stop beating this dead horse.
Last year was the perfect opportunity to accept this reality....

Littlejohn only has a seating capacity of 9000 and there are almost twice that many students and townspeople

some of whom actually care about basketball.
you won't fill up Littlejohn in Clemson even if you gave away tickets to students free. Not that many care on a continual basis.
In G-ville it would be like the Hornets are in Charlotte - corporate and family entertainment.
We could have used the refurb money for transporting students free to games,
had as many students show up as now almost,
and still come out ahead in $$$.

Our student attendance last year was awful. They've already made a huge difference in the UGA and Nebraska games, more than they ever made last year. Surely you're joking about this idea. Asking the players to ride a minimum of an hour to every game is crazy.
I think this thread is over-reacting quite a bit. And I'm as big of an advocate for going to support the team as any. I was there. But it was a nasty day, awful opponent, students gone or studying and almost done, and many fans making their way back from Florida.

and this is hardly an 'over-reaction'.
Hail, I know Dave Angel personally.
The idea of an "on campus facility" has been the death-knell of this program ever since Littlejohn was built.
As to having players ride "an hour", the football team rides in to Clemson every game day from Anderson
which is a similar commute as Clemson to Greenville. I think the players would gladly give up some time for guaranteed better crowds.
As to students, it's all in how you get them there - I proposed providing free transport to and from Bon Secours in G'Ville.
It adds a bit of time to the experience for students BUT
the time is typically a Saturday afternoon - which is minimal impact on students - or
a week night. Students would much prefer free transport on week nights anyway.
And for those who are walking from East Campus, it's already a 20-25 minute jaunt.
Clemson BBall should be in Greenville - Greenville's population is underserved for college/pro sports anyway -
let's see: Arena football, minor league baseball (not same season), and the Bob Jones equestrian team....
That's for a pop of at least 150k. Need I say more?

Yikes.
First of all, Anderson to Clemson is nothing like Clemson to Greenville. Secondly, the football team does it a maximum of 7 times in a season. Our basketball team did it 17 times last year. Third, football does it on a Saturday with nothing else going on. Our basketball team did it numerous times in the middle of the week with class the next day.
That alone should end the discussion.
In addition, free transportation was provided all year last year for students. It doesn't work. They don't want to ride a total of 2 hours to watch 2 hours of basketball.
Finally, Greenville's population is about 60K.

If Clemson had scheduled a quality opponent the crowd would have larger. Rain, a long night of football and exams all likely meant lesser attendance.
Go Tigers!

December is preseason for all teams. Not every game in basketball could be a quality opponent.
Do you know how many games they play all season? This ain't football.

Was our AD there? Maybe you should complain to him. There is probably a reason for the low attendance and he should figure out how to resolve the problem since that is HIS job. Just an idea.

No, because or AD is on the football playoff committee.

He is regularly at our basketball games when he is in town, however. And I disagree that it is the AD's job to get fans in the seats. He has two main jobs:
1. Hire the right coach who will be successful. 2. Give that coach all he needs to be successful (support, facilities, staff, etc.).
We do not know the answer to either of these. Brownell has shown some flashes of being that coach, but has had some down times as well. However, he has not had the support needed until now. Facilities were awful until this renovation. Clemson has finally shown a commitment to basketball, and you are already seeing the results in recruiting (top 25 class for 2017) and in this year's team as well (we are clearly better than last year).
I understand that many fans are taking a wait-and-see approach with basketball, but why can't our fans step out of their comfort zone and support the basketball team more than they currently are? They now have a great arena to watch games in, and an entertaining team to watch on the court. I get that the team has a responsibility to be competitive, but if we are honest we will acknowledge that our team has been very competitive the last few years - just not quite enough wins. Perhaps better fan support would be what our program needs to get over the hump.

How many excuses do fans get?
Dec 4, 2016, 6:04 PM
|
|
Already this year, I have heard the following excuses for our fans not showing up to games (today wasn't the first time the attendance has been poor):
1. Football away game 2. Big rivalry football game/late game the night before 3. Basketball game started too late 4. Exams 5. Poor opponent
The bottom line is that Clemson doesn't support basketball very well. Hopefully we will have better attendance once conference play starts.

I had season tickets for years, sat through many a bad game and some butt whippings. Got screwed at the well as I hung on a rafter while more than half the lower seats were empty. Then when they decided to redo seating in the new John, after speaking with a rep chances were I would lose my decent upper bowl seats I decided I was done. Probably never go back to the John, I'll just watch at home. I think they made a serious mistake by not rewarding long time season ticket holders. Oh well I saved some money and time.
