On topic : what is considered "success" for Clemson basketball ? (Long)

Looking to see what opinions you all have on what "successful" is with Clemson basketball team ??

IMO they are :

1. Look at the history of the program, is the team winning more or treading water.
2. Look at the players, I.E. are we getting better players, more athletic players than we did in the past.
3. Stable coaching/staff with program.
4. Does team perform at crunch time with minimal miscues/turnovers.
5. What is the perception of the team from within College basketball.

1. I think Clemson can check off #1. With this years Elite 8 run and another Sweet 16 run 6 years ago. That is awesome considering the history of the program, no doubt.

2. It is difficult to know for sure. PJ, Ian, Godfrey, Hunter, Gerard are all talented players. Ian has improved to the point that he is nearly an equal to PJ and with another year left to showcase his talents. As a starting 5 I put this team up there among the best starting groups and maybe the best 5 ever. Highly subjective but results matter and this team was able to get it done when no other group could reach the Elite 8 in the NCAA tourney.

3. Definitely a check mark here. Heading into year 15 with Brownell. Not sure of entire staff but stability from the top is there.

4. Up/Down here. In the NCAA tourney it was definitely good. Other than missing the free throws Saturday I thought our Tigers fought to the very end. It happens, but if team capitalizes on those free shots the ending could have been different, who knows for sure.

5. Clemson basketball, history will say it is insignificant. Very little history, no ACC titles, NCAA tournament every few years on average. Just not much to talk about honestly. BUT, did this season change that in the eyes of the basketball world ??

What does this season mean to those recruits/portal players that Clemson needs to replace some veteran leadership/scoring/rebounding/shooting ?? It can only help to have more eyes on this team. Our Tigers need it all, and this season could prove very meaningful in the future of Clemson basketball.

Thanks for reading, much appreciated and hope to hear thoughts. Go Tigers!!

Success = short term
Successful= long-term sustainable success

Was this year a success? Extremely!!!

Has the Clemson basketball program been successful under its 14 year coach? Not hardly.

Hopefully this year can be a springboard into sustainable success and the program can string together several more seasons like this one.

2 wins at NC. 2 Sweet 16's. Neither have been done previously. Its got a way to go but the flippant not hardly is ignoring some positives and acting like each loss is an ACCT BC game. Smacks of agenda and bias. Recruiting and the trendline have been better. Multi year sustainability is what is needed plus showing up for the ACCT and winning is so long overdue it isnt funny

Pointing out those few and far between successes and ignoring 1seed home court first round knock outs in NIT, losing to a team late in the season who was literally the worst team in the country(Louisville) losing to a terrible coot team, year after year of first round losses in the ACCT, losing multiple games in a row to close out the regular season multiple years, and only making the tournament 3 times in 14 years, reeks of bias and agenda.

Like I said in the last 14 years we have had small short successes. But ultimately when you look at the bigger picture, the whole body of work, it's hard to argue it has been successful. No bias, no agenda, just facts and reality.

Nice post for sure. For #2, I would say yes based on a top 25 recruiting class who enrolls this summer. Of course, we will need to supplement from the Portal but it seems the interest is high based on who we got last year and also who seems to be interested this year.

Are we really *trending* in the right direction with talent also, or is the next class just one success? One or two 4*s every 4 or 5 years? And about half of the 4*s signed transferred out of the program quickly.

As near as I can tell, CBB has signed seven 4* players in his 14 years in Clemson. Only 4 stayed with the program. Two are on the current team. No 5*'s ever. No McDonald's All-Americans ever.

2020 P.J. Hall 4-star, no. 62 overall
2014 Donte Grantham 4-star, no. 75 overall
2011 Bernard Sullivan 4-star, no. 83 overall (transferred to Charlotte after 1 year)
2017 Amir Simms 4-star, no. 93 overall
2019 Chase Hunter 4-star, no. 105 overall
2016 A.J Oliver 4-star not ranked (transferred to Old Dominion after redshirt sophomore year)
2020 O.M Prosper 4-star, not ranked (transferred to Marquette after freshman year)

This year and next year's classes do have two young men who were 4* prospects in 247sports.com composite (updated)

2023 Asa Thomas 3* No. 240
2024 Dallas Thomas 4* No. 84 (considered for, but not named to McD's AA team)
2024 Ace Buckner 3* No. 156
2024 Del Jones 4* No, 128

So next year's team will have two consensus 4* players who have never played an CNAA games (unless PJ Hall uses his COVID year to play for Clemson one more time). Hall gone, C Hunter gone, JGIII gone, Clark gone.

Will next year's starting 5 be?

D Hunter
Beadle
Scheifflin
Godfrey
Wiggins

or will one of the recruits break through?

Short. Winning season record, winning ACC record, beat South Carolina, beat all the teams that will be Tier 3 and 4, have players that are student athletes, players that stay out of trouble and make the NCAA tournament.

season with:

1. A regular season record above.500 ?

2. A regular season ACC record above .500 ?

If so - the rest has no credibility as you are a part of the problem . . . .

A winning record ? Wowowowowowowowow-weeeeeeeeeeeee . . . . .

Brad Brownell: Only Larry freaking Shyatt has a WORSE overall winning percentage among Clemson basketball coaches since 1975. Let that sink in. It's Larry Shyatt & then Brad Brownell.

We should be able to make the NCAA tourney 1/2 years on avg or better

win the ACC tournament at some point ever. (But may never happen if we leave or it implodes, ofcourse. So, "conference tournament".)

Make a final 4 at some point, too.

And winning the ACCT. At this point, I would settle for 2 wins in one ACCT.

You might want to do more research - your summary of point #2 is incorrect as this is not the first Elite 8 group from Clemson.

You are right, my mistake in saying it was first team to make Elite 8 when it was actually the 2nd.

No need for more research, simply made a mistake in point #2 that you corrected. Appreciate it!

44 years, let us all hope it’s not another 44 before it happens again!!
