While it is somewhat okay to discuss this on our CLEMSON forums, I really wish anyone as famous as Kirk would not mention this to the football world. This is something OUR COACHES need to decide, and not be influenced by outsiders. Dabo is going to contact t-net any day now, and we will inform him what is needed.

Why, because it might be true? Did he say Kelly shouldn't start the beginning of the season now too? Or is he saying exactly what we have been? Some people need to unbury their head from the sand.

Agree! If Kelly starts then I don’t want to hear we will play the best player anymore. Just say we will start the older guy

It's all just more noise from another analyst. Again, leave it to the coaches to put the best players on the field! It's not like they haven't said they can win with any of QBs.

It's always "noise", till the coaches actually do it... Notice, he didn't say Trevor needed to start the season, just said he may be needed by the end of it. At some point, people will realize that the coaches haven't made a decision that goes past game 1.

Sometimes it has to do with more than just playing the better guy. I have heard numerous ppl talk about how Dabo didn't wanna lose the team over making the decision too quickly. Meaning, moving from Bryant to Lawrence. It's really sad to think that players would quit on the team just because their buddy wasn't the starting QB. But apparently it must be a possibility. I hate the thought of thinking there's players on this team who care more about their friend playing, than the bigger picture of winning a championship. Problem is, it doesn't take a whole lot beat Duke or Wake Forest. And the same ppl, even Tigernet. That's hyping him up in those game, will turn on him when the going gets tough. Be who you are from day 1, I say... Anyways... we'll see #21

Uh oh, KB defenders aren't going to like Herbie saying what some of us have in discussions.
“With Clemson, I think it's a little different. Kelly Bryant made some plays and did some things,” Herbstreit said. “Truth be told, they won a lot of games because of their defense and other aspects of their offense."
Guess we aren't so wrong when we said that about last year.
Either way, we start with Kelly, so hopefully his camp improvements translate to the field. Go Tigers!!!!

Ofcourse we won a lot of games in large thanks to our D last year. As we did the year before as well. See Auburn and NC ST as references.

There's a few on here that have gone a bit off the wall when it's been stated.
Last year, FSU is one of those he's talking about. Mostly defense and the RB's. Same with VT.

KB played very well against VT. Not his fault our D was great so he didn't have to score a ton. We scored over 30 points in the game so our O was fine. The FSU game he did not play well for sure. Ofcourse he benefited from having a great D but the D benefited from having a great running game and an O that did not turn the ball over a lot.

Bama’s D dismantled Clemson last year

I won easy money off the game (after betting Clemson to win championship pre-season). Understanding Clemson has the easiest path to 2018/19 playoffs, why would any unbiased analyst project Clemson to beat Bama when Bama has upgraded at QB?

Surely, having already been through this same scenario with DWatson Dabo/staff would start TLaw if he was truly was ready. Dabo also knows to beat Bama or Ga you'll need Lawrence to have more than a game or two of mop-up duty under his belt.

As a coot and an impostor. As the only or one of the very view national analysts who selected Deshaun Watson & Clemson in the preseason and throughout 2016 to win the natl championship, he has clearly lost his way over the past two years and is on the path to irrevelance. Sad story.

Both of those two team are having to replace a lot of big time starter talent. Yes both those teams are very talented on both sides of the ball, but so is Clemson, but we don't have to replace as many starters as both those teams will!!! Herbie is regaining his ESECPN love for the sec with Smart at UGA!!!

I have always respected Herbstreit's opinion. May not have always agreed but respected. On this one he may be correct. We do need a QB who can make the throws to backup the Bama defense. I have always been honest about not feeling KB as a QB. I think that TL should be the starter. As a freshman he can't do anything but improve. As long as he doesn't turn the ball over and give the opposition a shortfield we are good. KB can't throw...plain and simple. His mechanics are horrible and his decision making ability is suspect. He has reached his maximum ability. With TL sky is the limit and with our reciever's we should he able to hang 40 points on anybody real easy. But in the end as always, I defer to the coaches to make the best personnel decisions to get us to CFB championships game in Cali.

What is wrong with you people. If the Tigers start TL right away, KB will transfer, and our season will be 1 injury away from being sunk. The Tigers can easily win almost every game easily with KB, and use TL in the 3rd and 4th quarter to get him experience. Then we can go with TL in the playoffs if needed, and by then it will be to late for KB to transfer, and KB can save face by saying that the opposition preparing for a run first QB caused the switch. There is simply no reason to take the chance of losing KB for most of our regular season games, and KB does not deserve the dis-respect either. Now if we are struggling to win a game because a defense is keying on KB's running ability, they can put in TL for that reason, but at least let the situation dictate such a move. You people act like putting in TL will guarantee a 15-0 season, but TL could be injured early and leave you to play a QB that you have already clearly indicated you do not trust.

So mislead KB & ruin his final yr of eligibility for depth?
Aug 26, 2018, 3:49 PM
|
|
It seems like you're saying that for the sake of QB depth, Dabo should mislead KB and ruin KB's final year of eligibility by not starting TL until it's too late for KB to transfer elsewhere. That would be an awful way to treat KB. I hope Dabo wouldn't do that. If Dabo thinks TL is the best QB, then Dabo should start TL ASAP or at least before it's too late for KB to transfer. If KB were to transfer, we'd be frighteningly thin at QB, but doing the right thing isn't always easy, and Brice isn't chopped liver.

No...I'm saying that you don't remove him as starter until the situation warrants it. If he is able to perform, I have no problem with him starting all year and letting TL get reps when the games are well in hand. When the playoffs come around however, if the offense is unable to sustain drives due to their lack of respect for KB's ability to complete deep passes, then they should pull him, if he can't complete them. I just do not think they should do so just because everybody on these boards think TL is DW4. You let the play of KB2 dictate when that will happen...not what a bunch of analyst and fans think. I personally think KB2 is a lot better QB than many give him credit for.

What makes you think he’s so good? His ability to read defenses? His pocket awareness? His ability to check out of a bad play into a good play? His mechanics and accuracy? I’ve got news for you, he was to say nicely pretty average to below average at all of those qualities last year.
He never stepped up in the pocket and kept his eyes downfield when pressured. He always dropped his eyes and rolled out; taking away any chance to find an open man downfield, often causing sacks or short gains.
If his first read was covered, he rarely scanned the field for a second or third target, instead he would tuck it and run. Again this takes away any chance of big plays down the field, sometimes resulting in decent scramble yards, but more times than not it results in sacks or no gains. Don’t even get me started on all of his mistakes in the read option game. Almost every time he made the wrong read.
The most maddening thing about KB. A jr qb, was his inability to check out of bad plays. He never knew where the safeties were. Even simply moving his rb to the opposite side to pick up blitzers was a site for sore eyes. These are things that most qbs learn in their redshirt and freshman years. I realize it was his first year starting, but it didn’t get better as the year went on.
Even if he improves all of those flaws dramatically, there’s still the accuracy issue. It’s iust a lot for him to overcome to become a quality qb that can carry a team to beat teams like bama. I hope he can improve this year, but as most I am very skeptical.

Sarge is right...KB starts and play TL & CB as much as possible to have them game ready down the stretch. Keep defenses off balance having to prep and play against two different styles. KB has earned the respect for his leadership and should get his due. BUT...he must continue or bring in the new gun. Goona be exciting to see this season unfold. Go Tigers
