Ryan Linthicum

Dec 17, 2022, 11:19 PM

What’s the scoop?

Any shot at him stepping up at center so Putnam can move back to guard

He was highly recruited, but obviously the coaches didn’t think he was ready

He was #1 center that recruiting year. Sounds like he came in as a big boy but needed to transition his body. I read something saying he had almost completely transformed and his strength had increased substantial.

That said, im not sure if he is being coached for different position but sounds like he is close but dont think he would beat out Putnam at Center. Maybe he could play RG?

Spot on. Also note the center also calls the blocking scheme so it’s not just a physical issue. It takes time to learn the mental aspects of the position.

Good call out. If he isn't picking up the playbook or gaining the ability to adjust the blocking scheme based on what the defense is doing - his playing time will be limited. Like an RB who isn't good at pass-pro; it can limit your snaps if you struggle with it.

No reason he can't be #2 center one more year but log more

snaps and then be a two year starter.

I'd rather have 2 good centers than start moving guys we don't need to move. Both guards are back.

I agree. Putnam isn't moving. You don't want keep shuffling guys around if you don't have to. With JMac leaving that frees up a spot. Competition for that opening will be interesting. Leigh is #2 on the chart there, but I wouldn't assume that to be a done deal. Tate or Mays already on the left side could push out.
Sadler could also push his way into the conversation as next man in at either guard spot.
