FLASH BACK --> Last year right before the bowl game I posted on TNet. The basic summary - Dabo names co-OC and everyone is freaking out. I quoted the famous Aaron Rodgers "RELAX." Dabo always has a plan, Dabo always has a reason. He knew what he was doing.
TODAY --> I still believe what I said then, Dabo does have his plan and does know exactly what he is doing. I still believe the choice with offensive coordinators was a good one (with the exception of the lack of downfield attempts in the 1Q last week). I like the quick short pass/run offense as long as it is mixed with the deep down the field try to keep a defense honest every now and then, and think they are doing a great job so far sitting at 3-0 btwn the RAB and this year.
However, the one thing I cannot figure out Dabo's plan on... Danny Pearman and the special teams. I will give him that the kicking situation is tough losing Lakip to being dumb, and fortunately with the two offsides last week we were able to make our 3rd attempt on the field goal. I actually think Huegel will be a great kicker, he was just nervous with it being attempt 1. Besides that we are bad on special teams. BAD.
Something has to change with special teams or I believe it could cost us this year. We need to be able to kick the ball off, and not a little pooch kick, and be able to run down and make a tackle inside the 25. It takes pressure off a young D. Venables will blame himself before he admits its anyone else's fault. But, look at Wofford. We don't fumble on a punt return, they don't score a TD and besides the trick play in the second half which led to a field goal, the D would have given up a goose egg to start the year. Last week, App State had a couple of big returns before we resulted back to the pooch.
Again, its Wofford/App State and didn't really matter. But it could be tomorrow in a bigger game on the road where we don't need a stupid mistake. I believe without a doubt the talent on this team is enough to be special, but I do think for that to happen special teams need a little shake up and more consistency. Keep Pearman for sure but tell him to change something up. Try a new scheme. So this is a question to all of the readers and the purpose for this post.. Am I the only one who thinks we are pretty bad on special teams? What am I missing and why is there no change in schemes regarding returns/return coverages?
On a brighter note. Good guys beat the cards tomorrow, a little adversity early possibly, but then we take over Papa Johns. GO TIGERS
I agree on Danny Pearman 100%. I remember how solid our special teams were before he got he and it has been nothing but a constant progression of getting worse on punt and kickoff coverage under his watch. Add in the fact the he isn't a good recruiter and I've wondered year after year why Dabo hasn't made a change.
