I was very disappointed when they closed. Great food and decent prices. The tenderloin sliders were awesome.

Is it traffic related, or just cost of real estate?

Over here where our office is in Greenville, traffic is becoming such that a store could be giving away Ferrari's and it would still be a tough sell to get me to go. Trying to get anywhere these days has become flat out miserable.

I'm not sure.

I was told that local impact fees (read Mafia like taxes) are keeping new business from opening. In my quest to start a Groucho's over here last hear thats what teh current owner said about opening over here. I don't know what's killing the old ones. Restaurants closing to openings are about 2:1 over here though. Some of these places (liberty, old post office) are in relativity easy and lower traffic areas to get to.
As for the sporting goods/fishing place..Haddrell's is the only one that can seemingly keep that business going. If they close..there won't be any more over here, other than D ick's..but that doesn't really count.

I can't understand how the Groucho's in WA stays open. Every time I go by there it seems that the parking lot is completely empty but the sign says open. Maybe they do enough at lunch. I haven't eaten there since it was relatively new.

It's the worst Groucho's that I've eaten at as well.

I've narrowed it down to 3 Groucho's that are good: Downtown CHS, 5 Pt's (but it smells like sewer in there) and in Clemson. The rest that I have been to are terrible renditions.

They cut corners to franchise and it hurt them IMO

The biggest thing is the original in 5-points is WAY better than all of the rest and there's one main reason. At the original they heat the buns up in ovens, and everywhere else they use microwaves. It makes the bread tough/chewey. That's just been my experience. The original is awesome, but almost all other locations, notsomuch.

Too bad it smells so bad at the one in 5 pts though. Well, that, and that its in Columbia.

5 points used to be a freaking swamp. It's a low spot

and as a result all of downtown Columbia flows into it. It's a miracle it smells as good as it does.

I'd try downtown or Clemson or 5 pts first.

Then go back to the one in Summerville to make your comparison. Those are known quantities, IMO. I don't know anything about the one in S'ville so I can't say.
They are good sandwiches though, especially if someone may have been overserved the evening before.

I'd agree with that for anything new

but those 3 or 4 places were all established. Village post office had been open for a while ( t lest 10 years), and liberty has been there (as liberty) for 10 years, and another 8 or so before that as T-bones (same owners).

Skyline or Gold Star.
Enough people from Ohio to keep it hopping for a long time to come.

I saw more Ohioans that one would probably see in Cleveland.
That place is Ohio south. I only go to the marina that way and don't venture into the bourgeoisie areas much. Holy crap-It literally is an invasion.

I guess it's not as bad as all the yankee transplants in South Florida. One good hurricane may be necessary to cleanse the region.

They get all uppity about and star mumbling something about how we're still fighting the civil war and how they are making it so much better here.
They don't get that we don't like their invasion because what they are really doing is making here a rude and nasty place like where they left. I saw it last night at a bar on DI. People running into you, not saying even "excuse me", and generally just being rude.
We got to talking to a group of folks visiting from NY, who seemed very nice. One woman from their group got up to go get a drink, and some dink walked by and just took her chair. I'm like "Hey..dude...there is someone sitting there." He pretended not to hear me and just kept going. I notice more and more stuff like that around here. I mean it's certainly not like being in big city or anything where crime is bad and there are gangs, but its just different now, and not in a good way.

The folks from NY were leaving anyway; but that I think just kind of pushed them out of the door. When she got back, she ended up not getting a drink and they left, and we did not long after.
Not a real reason I guess, but I just didn't feel like getting into it with him.

From his loud voice I heard before that and his running around, he didn't sound to be any locals I have ever known.
