fault the developers didn't do their due diligence up front and secure ALL of the necessary properties before plowing ahead with construction. They just assumed they could bully her out of her house, as they've probably done before. I hope the developers lose their a$$ on this deal....

I don't think they put acreage on the registry.

Interesting especially since the planning commission in hilton head has more requirements than most. Maybe they should have protected this lady. The commission should have required a privacy fence or buffer between her and the development.

I hope whoever she is planning to leave the land to is a passionate towards the land as she is and it’s spelled out in a will. This is a lot of stress for a 93 year old lady to endure. Wish her and her family good luck .🙏

Hope she wins! My granddaddy was offered Kiawah island for $42k in ‘39 (the whole island). He said that was like a million dollars coming out of the depression, wish he could have scraped it together.

I had one grandfather who worked in a cotton mill (Orr Mill in Anderson) and another who was a farmer. In 39 they had 10 children between them. I doubt collectively they could have raised $500.

but if you plug 42K in 1939 into an Inflation Calculator, that's the equivalent of over $900K today. It was indeed almost a million bucks. And NOBODY had that kind of money coming out of the depression unless you were a Rockefeller. My mom was born in 1917 and came of age during the depression, although she always referred to it as Hoover Days...

The whole island sold for just $125K in 1952... "In 1952 C. C. Royal Lumber Company purchased the island from the Vanderhorst family for $125,000".

Developers usually try to “money hook” people in this scenario. Got to build her up a good money chest and hope she has lawyers that truly want to help her. I’ve seen this often in my line of work. If I’m not mistaken the legislature passed some stuff a while back to protect
“Heir Land”. Don’t know if this falls under that or not.

I relate to her in many ways, I come from a long line of suffering. My great grandmother was a Holocaust survivor, my Great Grandfather was in a Japenese internment camp, I was there and barely escaped the 9/11 and had to run down 110 stories from Windows of the World to safety with 200 lb waiter on my back. I now live in Columbia. I know what it is to suffer. Just leave her alone. From the famous words of Martin Luther King..."Can't we all just get along?"

Main St was exploding with development. My memory is a bit fuzzy on some details, but I remember the overall story, as I followed it in the Gville News. This guy had an old building that developers wanted, but he turned down all their offers. Then he started getting regular visits from city inspectors. They'd find "a problem" and give him so long to correct it. This happened several times as he made the necessary repairs. They just bled him dry. Finally they told him it was unstable and a danger to surrounding buildings, best I recall. Honestly can't remember if they threatened to condemn it, but bottom line is he eventually lost the building.

Developers with deep pockets and the "right connections" can royally screw you over...

Very difficult to beat the developers when they've paid off the local pols even when the land owner has the money to fight it. The local pols here rollover like a $5 ##### for any developer who walks through the doors. The garbage put up down the road from us has less architectural appeal than a rusty 1950s mobile home. The developer even violated some of the city's frontage road and subdivision street and entrance requirements. I sent an email to the city transpotation director complaining about the car wrecking temporatory road surface put down. He referred me to an NC DOT rep who said they were going to stop home sales until the fixes were done to the road and other issues. The developer evidently is a POS. Wish this lady much success in her fight.

Developers trying to push folks off their land or using the court system to get their way is nothing new. The slashing of tires and hanging a snake attic seems odd to me. The story obviously seeks to drawing on emotion to pull the readers to one side of the dispute. I hope she can keep her land but have my doubts on the accuracy of the story
