If the press publishes information given to them but illegally obtained?

Does freedom of the press apply?
If it violates the privacy of a US citizen?
If it jeopardizes US security?
If it was stolen information?

I dunno, maybe folks should read further than...the headline? At least every once in a while?
Misleading tabloid headline aside, the article does (eventually) get around to mentioning that this isn't about Hunter Biden but rather that Herridge she won't give up her source for a case involving her reporting on a Chinese national who was investigated and then never charged by the Feds.
This isn't about Biden at all...it's the age-old battle between the authorities and the press, and this isn't a new problem. The Feds have a leaker dropping classified info in their own house, and they're trying to sweat out of Herridge who it is. And good on her for not giving that source up...though if she does, she's finished as a journalist, because if she gives up this source, what future source would ever trust her to protect them ever again?
So the question here is: are the Feds trying to do that because someone is actually endangering sources and methods, or - and to me this possibility is a lot more troubling than Hunter Biden's tired old laptop story - are they doing it to make an example of Herridge, and put a chilling effect on other journalists and potential whistleblowers that might seek in the future to put out stories about their investigations?
Also, I'm clearly not the only one that worry occurred to. Both Chuck Schumer and Chip Roy - not exactly guys who see eye-to-eye on much - are both supporting the PRESS act that would protect Herridge and others in her situation from being leaned on by the government in this case and in future cases. And that bill has passed the House on a bipartisan vote and is now under review in the Senate.

DOT 4 - A citizen is suing the government and FBI

For disclosing private information without consent. That’s kind of a key point.
If an IRS employee discloses tax information through the press, should a citizen have recourse?

Because I'm not sure you'll get an answer from him. But the onus is not on the press, and safeguards for the press are put in place for these reasons.
If they can be locked up for refusing to disclose sources over privacy matters, they can also be locked up for trying to protect whistleblowers of government wrongdoing. And that precedent will be extended to that, I promise.

So the Press can basically act like a fence for illegally obtained information

Without any regard for “harm” done to citizens?
Seems the legal definition of harm, privacy, slander, libel etc. come into play. Lawyers have job security on these types of issues.
It’s hard to make definitive statements without knowing details of each case … and then it can still be debated and litigated.

The underlying issue? A government employee allegedly violated

The Privacy Act which prohibits disclosure of information on private citizens without consent. The disclosure was initially made to the press (Fox News Journalist) in 2017 which made the information public. The citizens whose information was disclosed by a government official through the press is suing the government and FBI. The judge is requesting the source. Who knows the proper resolution between a citizen’s right to privacy and freedom of the press.
Hunter Biden and CBS News seem to be irrelevant but add to potential conspiracy and underlying assumption of political persecution.

I don't know about the fed's motives, but this is absolutely inexcusable by the fed. Now, where Chem is wrong is that it isn't about Hunter Biden; Quoz already pointed that out. It's also from stuff that happened before Biden took office.
And yeah, I read the whole case. This is a violation of freedom of the press.
