Leon is a social studies teacher in Columbia. Monday through Friday he spends more time posting on Tigernet than teaching. He’s a prime example of why my kids tell me teachers are dumber than the students.
I grew up in a small town in the 80’s and teachers were the most respected citizens in town. He’s a hack that wouldn’t be able to hack it in the real world.

When did I admit that I have no control over the classroom?
Trying to lecture for 90 minutes to teenagers is pointless. Their attention spans are shortening every year because they live in a digitally stimulating world. I would be failing them if all I did was lecture. Their minds, quite literally, are incapable of focusing for that long. It’s not a matter of want to either. They simply cannot focus for that long.
I want them to learn something. And I want them to learn it on their own, with my assistance along the way. I don’t want them to simply accept what me, an authority figure, has to say. I could tell talk about Thomas Jefferson and his beliefs to a classroom full of kids that can’t remain focused for 5 minutes. But I’d rather create a lesson plan that forces them to go read what Thomas Jefferson actually said, so that they can learn on their own what he actually believed.
Does that make sense? Or should I simplify it further for you?
