It's not all or nothing with Clemson's coaching staff

Dec 1, 2013, 4:35 PM

reading over posts, people are falling into one of two camps, wanting to clean house, getting rid of Dabo and everybody else (or at least putting them on the hot seat) or people totally absolving Dabo of any fault, saying it's either bad luck or the players have to execute.

It's neither of those.

Firing Dabo Swinney would:

A) cause a mass exodus of player transfers. He is BELOVED by the players. It would get NASTY

B) you aren't bringing in a big name coach after firing a 3 straight years 10 win coach. Last time you had to hire an unknown in house assistant after you fired Tommy Bowden, for much more cause. David Cutcliffe isn't coming to a Clemson program that just fired Dabo Swinney, lol.

C) completely fracture the fanbase. Sure, losing 5 straight to USC has somewhat done that already, but for the most part the big money people like Dabo.

D) Completely destroy recruiting momentum.

E) probably lead to the team taking a step backwards for AT LEAST 1 year, as players shift around, philosophies change, a new HC gets his staff working together effectively, players get used to new schemes, etc

F) it'd cost a lot of money.

Now, on the other hand that doesn't mean doing nothing is the answer either. I think what's been wrong with Clemson hasn't been "big picture" schematic things, but rather smaller, "practice execution things." That goes back to the position coaches. Some of those guys probably need to go. Secondary and linebackers coaches. This tells people they aren't satisfied, while simultaneously avoiding most of the issues outlined above.

There are absolutely coaching issues when you've been outscored 62-0 in points off turnovers in the 5 games Clemson has lost. That speaks to both improper focus on forcing turnovers and improper focus on avoiding them.

Dabo Swinney isn't a great coach, but you hired him, and right now he's unfireable. Venebles and Morris probably aren't worth quite what they're being paid, but they aren't going anywhere either at this point. But some moves still need to be made, even if it's not the big names you all pay attention to. Everybody underrates the importance of the lower level assistants, but when it comes to issues of execution, like Clemson has had against South Carolina, that's on them. If you're looking for a sacrificial lamb to sate the anger of losing 5 in a row to south carolina, that's where you look.

I agree re Dabo and he should be kept for a large number of reasons. however, I do believe his OC and DC should go. That call from OC in the first quarter re the Sammy pass was not a mistake but shows a total lack of understanding of the game, momentuim , etc.etc. His play calling is horrific but it works well against the patsies we play. The DC is the same and even worse. Shaw ran the QB draw at least 10 times and not once was he stopped for no gain or a loss. Sir, that is DC coaching plian and simple. In addition, it is rather clear that someone needs to teach Beasley the proper route to the QB. He was awful last night as time after time Shaw juked him and went for 10-20 yards. He understand nothing about containing the QB and if you didn';t see that , please review the tapes again and again/. It's there and these 2 need to go now!
I agree with all of your great points re Dabo but he does need some maturity in the coaching ranks.

What about the camp made up of people who want Dumbo to address the weaknesses on his staff? (O line, Strength and conditioning, special teams, over paid OC) I don't want Dumbo fired....yet. He should be given a shot at fixing these areas, and if he pulls a Tammy Bowdown and refuses out of "loyalty to staff" then we should clean house.
