Interesting stuff going on at ESPN.

6

Jul 1, 2023, 10:39 AM

Reading some sites about who was fired and why, I was struck by this thought. (Rambling, but I'll try to make it as brief as possible.)

ESPN is a woke company but still has to operate in a capitalistic economy. They have decided they are spending too much money on "on air personalities." They look around and see that they can get less experienced (cheaper) people to do the same job at less cost, so they are firing the old, expensive guys and replacing them with younger, cheaper guys.

That is one of the "uglier sides" of capitalism. If somebody can do the same job you are doing for less money, then you may be faced with the choice - take a pay cut or find another job.

It also struck me that ESPN covers professional sports, and this is exactly what happens with NFL and NBA and MLB players. It's why the average career is so short. When a rookie signs a contract it is for a few years at a relatively low cost. (Say 3 years.) When his contract is up the owners have a decision to make. Should they give him another contract, at a higher salary, or just cut him and pay a rookie who can do the same job.

If you are a superstar, no problem. But if you are a back up tackle, or the 2nd team QB, then your career is in jeopardy.

Heck, Vikings just cut Dalvin Cook. Why? Because in today's game they thought his new contract was not worth the money. They figure they can get a guy who can do almost as good a job for a lot less money.

ESPN announcers are learning to tough lesson. The money is great, but the career is short. And, the higher the pay, the shorter the career.

Very good thoughts with the exception that athletes lose their spots because better athletes come in. That thinning of the herd, if you will, happens in high school, college and professional sports. Younger, faster and stronger people come in every year. You are absolutely spot on that on air mouth cuts are all about money, not talent, and that has nothing to do with whatever woke is.

Short NFL careers.

I talked to a guy who played in the NFL. (He was a HS coach when I talked to him. Nice guy, not bitter at all about his situation.) Here is the way he described it.

Signed a 3 year contract when he got out of college. (2nd round draft pick.) At the end of the three years the team had to decide whether to offer him a second contract. NFL rules set the minimum payment for this contract. It was significantly higher than a rookie contract. He was the starting TE for the team. Solid player, but not all pro. They decided that while he would probably be better than a rookie TE the difference in play on the field would not be enough to justify the difference in the salary. They decided they could use the money saved by cutting him and signing a rookie could be used better elsewhere. His comment was, "It happens all the time. Every year there are plenty of guys who are up for their second contract and get cut. That's just football."

ESPN is doing the same thing. Why pay the talking heads megabucks when they can hire a younger guy who can do a good job for a whole lot less money.

-because the"Rookie"probably isn't as seasoned as these guys are. If they think people are going to watch Gameday to see McAfee do backflip off a Vol Navy boat is nuts... get rid of the completely useless on field reporters ...

Trivia what game was the first Gameday at Clemson?

The scary part of your analysis is this is exactly what is happening with medicine. Older, experienced RN's are replaced with right-out-of-college nurses that have only had book training. (They also can't stay off their phones, call in "sick" on their birthday or if their friends are going to the lake, and come to work with pink/orange/green hair, without bathing, and in wrinkled clothing)

Doctors are now forced to have 3-5 NP's under them and can't focus on face-to-face patient care.

It seems ESPN is keeping the loud mouth, WOKE representatives, showboating and rude personalities over the more subdued and professional on air people. This was actually predictable over the past 2-3 years. Certain people are being forced out while others are elevated. Stephen A** Smith is the most disgusting and loudest person on that network but I bet he keep his job and we know why.

I agree with you.

They are targeting an audience that likes the Smith and McAfee style.

I don't.

I watch ESPN less and less every month.

I don't watch anything they offer. Can't stand to watch 2 or more people argue their point about things where both are likely wrong.

Same here. If it's not a Clemson game or a F1 race, I have

not watched them in years. Plenty of sports to watch on things like NBC sports, CBS sports, FS1, and the like.

Steven A has his niche... it's not college football ... and he has an amazing life story. Does not make him one bit less annoying to listen to...

Yea wondering how you keep a Stephen A. Can’t stand the guy. Rarely watch ESPN except for a game never any of the opinionated shows. Be like me watching the View, will never happen.

They could have easily have gotten ridden of Heather Dinnich as well while they were clearing up cap space...all she ever does is dog college football and revel in reporting negative stories. Methinks shes cushy with some exec to have lasted this long with such little talent writing troll fodder.

2024 white level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

She’s an example of someone who isn’t even valuable enough to cut

2

Jul 1, 2023, 11:50 AM

The ones they cut were not the smallest names but the medium to upper names but not the very top ones. The ones that would help financially by cutting

They weren't cutting to get rid of incompetent people or improve their reporting.

They were cutting to get rid of salaries.

Better and more competent people usually make more than less competent people, so they were the ones that were let go...

Re: Interesting stuff going on at ESPN.

Jul 1, 2023, 11:57 AM

I think the difference to me is that, much like when newspapers cut competent employees, the people they hire to replace the ones they fired won't be as good and will in some cases be incompetent.

They aren't willing to pay to keep or develop competence because the fact that the people that are hired aren't nearly as good won't matter.

In fact, the ###### people who yell are the ones they kept because they are tracking "engagement" and clicks.

Hey Brett...sometimes I get MLF on Youtube and sometimes

Jul 1, 2023, 11:59 AM

I don't. Do you know what the deal is with that?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I don't think MLF live streams on youtube.

Jul 1, 2023, 12:12 PM

They livestream on majorleafuefishing.com. (They just finished up a tourney Thursday.) They do have a youtube channel (Major League Fishing). They have a regular show on Outdoor Channel where they show two hour highlights of recent tourneys.

One tourney left. I was rooting for Ott Defoe to win Angler of the Year. He had a big lead going into the tourney, but had a horrible event. (Lake St. Clair, Detroit). Going into last event here are the top 4.

Alton Jones Jr. leads.
Jacob Wheeler 7 behind.
Ott Defoe 9 behind.
Matt Backer 10 behind.

Easily the closest AOY standings ever with one event left.

Rarely do they give you an opportunity to work for a lower salary. They feel you will be bitter

Not watched ESPN or live TV other than games in 15+ years

Jul 1, 2023, 2:38 PM

I got so tired of the advertising political agendas and culture wars plus the yammering that was on there all the time like the news hyped up, breaking news junk and outright sensationalism in the programming and the shows. Once I left that thing off and just used the internet for my source for non-sports games, life became much more sane and peaceful. Then once Netflix and streaming services and YouTube came along, I really, really, really rarely turn on the TV. Everything I need is right here on my iPad. It goes wherever I go too.

News, movies, TV shows, sports games and so much more. And I get to choose who gets the benefit of my time watching or reading their stuff.

It has been a long time coming that the linear “broadcast” model would become too heavy cost-wise and the censorship and vanilla, non-controversial media talking heads would cease to command an audience worthy of advertisers paying the freight. Good riddance and goodbye!
