If WR wasn't going to be a real strength this year,

2

Sep 7, 2023, 11:28 AM

why no portal offers at that position or did we extend some WR offers and I missed it? I don't believe Phil Steele or PFF had us in their list of WR top 10 unit rankings. The national champion will likely come from a team on those 2 lists. So why not extend a few offers to the top available transfers? This is even more confusing, given that it appears we did offer a DB and an OL. I can't think of a reason for this decision other than our coaches being concerned it would cause current starters to transfer out? Or did our coaches not agree with the national pundits and thought they saw way more from our guys than the national analysts?
Not trying to beat a dead horse on the portal here, just confused about this specifically.

Last week Dabo told us how "excited" he was about the WR room. It's almost like he believes the lies.

Dabo don't need to redshirt any WRs cause we have not found any yet!

The talent is there.

Someone needs to bring it out!

I was hoping that the new OC would do it. And he likely will.
I’m betting that he is studying game film right now. The talent is in place. I think.
Brinningstool is a big time player I think. Look for him to improve and hopefully Collins’s as well,

I disagree. The "talent" is NOT there. We have one very good slot receiver in Williams. That's it.

None of them can block.

NONE--I repeat NONE--of our boundary WR's can create separation or run a good route. Not a single one of them. That's a fact.

THIS is the heart of the problem on offense, IMO. Dabo continues to willfully ignore the issues in the WR room.

Agreed. Watch the FSU tape from Sunday night. You can see what WR athletic talent looks like. We used to have dudes like that in the WR room.

Dabo told us Beau Collins would lead the way

1

Sep 7, 2023, 12:20 PM [ in reply to Re: If WR wasn't going to be a real strength this year, ]

Beau and his parents are 1st class. He is a good complimentary receiver. Beau lacks the speed, quickness and hands to lead the way. So why does Dabo say that Beau will lead the way?

A lot of deeply religious people believe you can speak things into existence. Maybe that’s what he’s doing.

We had zero schollies to give this year after recruiting. Helms and D. Thomas were lucky to get a schollie with Dudley getting kicked off team and the other transfer (forget which) gave 2 schollies for those guys. The option to bring in Portal guy wasn't available unless Dabo kicked people off schollie which he doesnt do.

Coach has to make though decisions

1

Sep 7, 2023, 12:26 PM

There were players on this team who would have had their scholarships yanked at any other major program. I get Dabo’s family philosophy and it’s great, but it definitely handicaps the program at times. We just have to sit back ride with it until the wheels fall off.

He should. These are now professional athletes hired to do a job. They leave in a heartbeat if they don't think Clemson will pay the most. If they can't perform, Clemson should find people who can. It's disappointing our best receiver would be 3rd string on 2018s squad.

This isn't necessarily true though.

Dabo offered Misun Kelley (10/7), Tyler Brown (11/12), and Jarvis Green (12/8) late in the recruiting cycle. Then he used up another scholarship on signing a 3rd string QB from the cycle.

That's 4 scholarships right there. Tyler Brown is going to help us this year, no doubt. Tink Kelley and Jarvis Green are not, as both are heading for a redshirt. Paul Tyson isn't going to help us either. Because if Cade gets hurt, the coaches will insert Christopher Vizzina, the 4 star QB that they signed, into the starting role.

I would imagine that Dabo made these decisions because he naively believed in the WRs that he had coming back. He wanted to give his guys a chance, which I respect. But Adam Randall and Cole Turner are not ready. Spector is a below average WR and Stellato has never stayed healthy. They were all we had returning after Beaux and Antonio.

It sucks for the other 80 players on the team that want to win a championship. Their head coach could have used the portal to make our WR room better. It is, by far, the worst position group on the roster. 1-2 transfers would have drastically improved it. Instead, we signed 3 dudes that aren't going to help us win this year.

But I think most of the elite portal receivers have already been tampered with prior to entering the portal. So unless we are willing to do that as well I find it unlikely we would land one anyways. Or we have to offer them huge NIL deals

Re: If WR wasn't going to be a real strength this year,

Sep 7, 2023, 1:15 PM

We all know tampering is a real thing. Dabo isn't going to do that and I respect him for it. But it's not like every person in the portal enters because they got offered a lot of money by someone else.

I would imagine all of the top 30 transfer portal WRs would have helped us this year. And I would also imagine many of them would have loved to have come to Clemson if we were interested. I don't believe all 30 of them were tampered with and had a destination already in mind when they chose to enter the portal.

Don’t buy this at all. A guy like Jamari Thrash isn’t going to Louisville if he gets an offer from Clemson and has access to REIGN. Especially with him growing up not far away in Georgia. Just don’t buy these excuses.

Portal aside, why not get a legit WR coach

1

Sep 7, 2023, 12:25 PM

To coach up what we have?! If he won't budget on the portal, at least give us a fighting chance with the best WR coach we can get. We knew Grisham didn't have it last year and yet here we are and not a #### thing has changed.

Re: Portal aside, why not get a legit WR coach

Honest question for those that followed the Bowden years closely. Was Swinney as good of a WR coach as Grisham has shown? Seems like we occasionally hear about Dabo stepping over and “assisting” Grisham in practice. What have they achieved these past few years since Jeff Scott? The fact that both coaches are mentoring and Dabo is constantly talking up that position group when they’re healthy is really concerning based on what we see on Saturdays.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Nah, he was decent. Trying to think back, but

1

Sep 7, 2023, 12:51 PM

Chansi Stuckey and Jacoby Ford may have been Dabo’s best during his time as WR Coach.

I think Dabo brought a lot of fire to the WR room. He used to give out a weekly "de-cleater" award to the WR who threw the best blocks.
So while our current WRs may not have great skills, they can still get after it and de-cleat someone on the other team.

The last two years was a QBissue...we fixed that...fumbles, turnovers, fg kicking are fixable...after all we are spoilt...but we did not go to Durham ready to play and that's on Dabo & Riley...the D made some big mistakes as well...Trotter & Carter are All-Americans only in Dabos mind...you can't miss seven RB catches out of the backfield and still be elite! The field play and the outcome are always the final arbiters!

I don't know if anybody who would help would cone here.

Take Coleman at Florida St. At Clemson, you have a first year quarterback, and no real second option at receiver to keep you from being double teamed.

At Florida St., you have an experienced quarterback and plenty of other weapons. Honestly, he probably doesn't come here.
