Would we be trashing him right now? Maybe, but it would be nice to have a more valid sample than this past year and the lack of WR capability we’ve seen.
I don’t want to say that DJ has anywhere near lived up to the hype out of H because he hasn’t,, but he has absolutely had no one to throw to compared to the QBs who preceded him the last decade.
If WR play doesn’t improve, we may all be wringing our hands next year over why Cade Klubnik isn’t living up to expectations.
The Collins kids look reasonably good, but they can’t do it alone. You have to have 5-6 good, dependable WRs at a minimum. You have to be able to rotate guys in and out to get max effort on every play running dee routes as decoys, blocking down field ... two guys just can’t sustain that.
EJ and Ngata have to come back strong ... Stellato has to get on the field and produce. The two incoming freshmen need to learn quickly. And maybe Spector gets healthy?
We’ve gotten really spoiled with outstanding QB performance for a long time, but it’s hard to deny that we’ve also been blessed with great receivers all during that period. Those receivers helped make the QBs look better. No one has done much to help DJ look better. There were several egregious drops last night.
DJs failure has been the product of a lot of factors, certainly including his own shortcomings. But, it’s not all on him and never has been.
I’m really looking forward to seeing kids develop this off season and hopefully stay healthy next season.
How about you?

Sure, DJ would have had better luck (and his confidence early in the season would not have been hurt) if he was throwing to WRs who could actually catch the ball ... as opposed to our butter-fingered WRs from early in the season.
However, he could have had Marvin Harrison & D.Hopkins & L.Fitzgerald as his WRs late in the season, and there still would not be deep pass completions. Why is this? DJ had a messed up index finger. No one can throw a good long pass with a bad index finger.

100% agree. Several former WRs had 10 ft catch radiuses with fewer drops.***

corps was not what is has historically been, they didn't get any help from their QB, either. There is such a thing as "throwing your receiver open". DJ just didn't have the accuracy or touch to accomplish that.

Time to quit making excuses for DJ. He's had 15 starts and I would take every Clemson QB since 2009 (except Cole Stoudt) over him. I have a hard time believing that the whole OL and Rec core is the worst since 2009. DJ has no field vision, footwork and throwing motion is slow and he's not a decisive runner either. There is no way he starts after game 4 next year. They didn't trust him at all last night. It looks like our QB and Receivers didn't practice 10 minutes this year. We can't run one pass play that looks planned besides screens. Thank goodness for our RB's and the defense or we would have lost 6 games.

Coot.
Yeah, the last 3s QB just happen to be the top 3 all-time QBs in the record books. You could say the same thing for Danzler, Fuller, and Whitehurst.
In addition, all three of those QBs had all-time HOF receivers as targets. I mean in the 10 previous years you had (as the OP noted) Nuke, Higgins, Renfrow, Sammy, as well as Cain (undervalued IMO), Mike Williams, Martavis, Artavis, Amari and even TE option like Leggett.
We did not even have an all-acc WR at any level. We did not have any consistency at the WR position. Even yesterday DJ hit a wide open Dacari along the sidelines. If that was a Sammy, Amari, Renfrow, etc, that would be a TD. Give those guys space and they find a way through. Unfortunately Dacari stepped out of bounds.

Better receivers won't fix DK's problems.

Sammy, Nuk, Tee, and Williams wouldn't have affected the Pick 6's against UGa and Pitt, for example.

Miscues?
Deshaun threw a bunch of picks in his career. So did Trevor at times.
The big thing was that we had enough talent overall that most of the time those mistakes didn’t cost us.
I will not give DJ a bit of credit he isn’t due. But, I stand by my statement that he’s had way less support than any QB of the Dabo era.

I agree with this, and I thought about this some. DJ has not had the luxury of reliable receivers this year I mean my God we had a Sweeney on the field last night in a bowl game. I don’t think he’s played very well, however I don’t believe he is as bad as he has looked. What really killed him is not having a Amari rogers or Hunter Renfrow on the field
