I want to hear from the "pumpers".....what would YOU do??

without saying "Whatever Dabo chooses to do is what NEEDS to be done".
What "steps" or "changes" would YOU make if you were in Dabo's position to get this program BACK to ELITE??? it could be anything and multiple answers.
there are no wrong answers.....just good or bad ones.

There is only a ACCCG and a bowl to watch to finally make up your mind. Or are you suggesting we shouldn’t believe our eyes because there is some behind the scene mystery that only the Lord could know?

Don’t really perceive myself as a “pumper” but I a loyal Dabo-ite. However, Dabo needs to come to grips with the fact that DJ is not going to lead us to greatness. He appears to be a great young man and I hate the reality we find ourselves in. But it’s time to try Cade to see if he can pull the team together to accomplish the mission at hand. What concerns me is what Dabo sees in practice everyday that makes him think Cade isn’t ready? It’s naive to think Dabo is content with mediocrity. He didn’t take us this far being content with a half hearted effort. So unless we think he has had a mental breakdown and is no longer who he has been up till last year, what is the explanation? It is foolish to think we want to win worse than the players do. They work their tails off every day to win ballgames. Dabo has the same interest that they do. So what is the explanation? I am at a loss. But it needs to change is we hope to keep up with Georgia, Alabama, Michigan and Ohio State. Go Tigers!

If Dabo sees in practice that Cade is still not ready or developed after being on campus since spring to even play when DJ is literally throwing games away, and he doesn't make coaching changes, then we are doomed. That is the more serious issue. How has Clemson failed to develop any players or how has recruiting missed on everyone they thought talented?
These are the simple questions being asked and every week for two years Clemson media and Dabo have #### on fans for asking for answers for issues so obvious even a casual fan can see them.

Not a pumper, and just my two cents

1. Stop hiring friends or ex-players with little to no experience to coach 2. Find an NFL type of OC coordinator and let them do their job 3. Find someone who can recruit and develop WRs 4. Give Cade some playing time 5. Use the portal for when players you have don't develop (again WR, OL) 6. Hire a good secondary coach 7. Stop wasting scholarships on family and friends.

What I would do is play Cade in the ACCCG if DJ falters. If DJ falters I start Cade in the bowl game. If Cade falters in either game ,then flip a coin to see who gets the starting reps in practice in Feb. because the outcome of the bowl game is really of no consequence. On the flip side I go get Jeff Scott and put him up top and put Streeter on the side line. I stick with Wes Goodwin for at least another season because even though it was Brent's defense he did a good job in his first season as the D.C. I take a good look at the strength and conditioning program. And lastly I stop being a cheerleader on the sideline, go back to managing the game and hold everybody accountable ,himself included and I would ditch the "DJ is my Guy" ego. That is what I would do, and to make certain I didn't miss anything I reread it twice to make certain I did not use the word "NEEDS" to do in any of my comments.

I agree with each point for sure. The one thing that stands out to me is we don't have the physicality advantage any more. So strength and condition needs to be addressed. I for the life of me understand why something has not changed at QB. I guess the Syracuse game was more important than winning yesterday. There are 3 five star guys at the position and neither of the two are capable of playing when needed? I just hopes something changes because I still have my CU cap on today and we have two more games.

Based on what I have seen in games, if I were the guy in charge this is what I would do. Big disclaimer because I don’t believe I have enough first hand knowledge or experience but I’ll bite. Not looking at this as what I would do for the remainder of this season (except the first item) since getting back to elite isn’t happening this year.
Get Cade some playing time. Somehow, somewhere. As others have said, at the first sign of shakiness from DJ in these last 2 games. But I would start DJ this week. Going into next year if DJ stays or jot it would be a real, unbiased competition, including Vizinna.
I don’t know what the exact thing needed to do this, but figure out how to get the production from WRs that we got a few years ago. Not being a coach I cannot say if we need different guys or different drills or a different QB or more motivation or a different coach but I believe that is the biggest difference in our offense now and when we were on top.
Put Goodwin in the box and let Eason be the sideline guy. Blitz a LOT like BV used to do. Bring the heat.
Open up the play book. More misdirection and perimeter run plays. Roll the QB out of the pocket with a TE crossing in front of him as a safety valve. More of the plays where the QB looks like he’s going to run and then pulls up and throws. Figure out if Streeter is on board and capable of doing that and make a change if he isn’t. I can’t say from here.
Improve our punt game. We pinned the coots deep once but it really just looked like a lucky bounce. We very rarely pin opponents inside the 10. That should be automatic.
That is the short list given just a few minutes to answer from the peanut gallery. The real answers would have to be a lot more involved and detailed because there is certainly a lot more to it than any of us can see from our vantage points.

I agree with FM not enough info to make a realistic opinion. I doubt you see Cade in meaningful moments in clt. Unless we are two scores or more behind. Too much still at stake in that game to completely change things. As for the bowl game I agree that if Cade practices well he should start. Basically an exhibition game so no harm done. Changes otherwise? The whole Streeter out thing could be completely opposite of what most think. Maybe DJ doesn't allow for a full playbook and Cade doesn't know enough for a change. Those kinds of decisions coach Swinney has a really good track record of making and thus not enough info to have an opinion. I'm not one for knee-jerk reactions like some here. And no one season or less than one is enough to evaluate on.

Klubnik had unparalleled h.s. success

Vizzina has been good but has not had success in the same hemisphere as Klubnik. Klubnik went undefeated and won two Texas 6-A championships. He won his way into Elite 11 QB championship vs. thousands of h.s. QB's and ended up rated #1 in Elite 11 finals winning more events than any other QB. Vizzina opened up with a 48-0 loss, won two, and has lost 6 his last 7 games. How will he compete vs. top rated QB in country? IMHO Cade has been highly disrespected at Clemson and should leave Clemson in December.

The first thing I would do is stop calling gimmick plays like the kick return.
The second thing I would do is tell all my return men to put two hands on the ball and just go down when you get hit.

If the second thing had happened the gimmick would have been a success. I would be critical of the gimmick call if Ship and Mafah mishandled the hand off but that wasn’t where the fumble happened. I don’t have a problem with that call. Actually kind of liked it right up to the fumble.

I have a problem with the call for several reasons.
South Carolina was kicking off from the 20. If you just let Shipley catch the ball and run straight ahead, he probably gets more yards than the trick play gained, even without the fumble.
Mafah is not that fast. Shipley is your return man for a reason. Mafah is used to running in between the tackles, no on kickoffs against guys with a head start.
Even if you do nothing but punt, you at least pick up field position, which was a big problem in the game.
It was just a bad idea all around.

but my prediction will be that they view DJ as the problem. They feel that everything is fine otherwise, and that better QB play will make us elite again.
In reality, we have major issues that go far beyond DJ. That will become clear to the pumpers when neither Cade nor Vizzina make us elite on their own.

I’m a proud pumper. I make every effort to stay positive and have been (mostly) successful for the last 25 years. It’s getting difficult to stay positive.
What I would do today: 1. Fire Streeter. 2. Demote DJ. 3. Williams never returns punts again 4. Bench Mukuba 5. Burn our 2 page offensive playbook
That’s where I would start and I hate feeling this way. I’m sure a win next week will improve my attitude.

Mukuba didn’t have his best game but I #### sure wouldn’t bench him. Williams struggled at punt returns yesterday. I personally would have had Shipley back there.

More of a realists but Cade starts next game. I said after yesterday’s game that DJ does not need to start anymore. 2 years of avg at best. Streeter making excuses for DJ’s play tell me all I need to know about him as a coach. Would be looking hard at finding an OC. I’m up in the air on Goodwin.

shows you just how out of touch with what is going on this man is. I can't believe we have someone like that heading our offense. He must be a real laughingstock in coaching circles.
You better believe opposing coaches are using this "experiment gone really wrong" against us in recruiting.

Pumper here...I've enjoyed the ride over the past decade,
Nov 27, 2022, 2:58 PM
|
|
for sure. Never thought we'd be at this place in college football. Ever. After the disappointments of the 1990s and 2000s, I feel that we've hit a bump in the road, but far from a burn it all down situation that some see. But we need some tweaks...here goes..
In recruiting (a two year step)... 1) Recruit full classes as the class sizes in the last few years have not allowed for any misses. 2) Recruit football players. Football players exhibit the willingness to block and tackle, and they have a will to win that can be seen on film. 3) Recruit FAST football players. We are missing speed on the offensive side, big time. 4) Keep up the good work recruiting the lines.
In the Portal: 1) Use it to find a back up QB and fast receivers. Even if the transfer guy can't catch, he could run jet sweeps, etc. We simply don't have this type of run in the playbook any more.
On the field: 1) Go ahead and state to DJ and Cade that they will be swapped out either series to series, or on a 2 to 1 deal. Then figure out who is moving it better, and roll on with it. 2) Make Special Teams a priority. Find a better punter or punt game. The punt game is EXTREMELY important in our current defensive minded/run game approach that we are currently having to turn to. 3) Throw to the tight ends. 4) Throw to the tight ends. 5) Throw to the tight ends. 6) Be a bit more creative in the run game. It was good to see the two back set yesterday, but even though the run game was productive, it was stale.
IN the stadium: 1) Tweak the music. Find some good hip-hop that the players and young folks identify with. Pretty sure bon jovi doesn't really do it for many folks any more. 2) Find a balance between the booming new sound and our band. It is awkward to say the least. 3) Sorry to whine about this, but the game day experience is currently suffering when you combine noon kicks, AVL issues, music that doesn't get folks moving, and the non-stop, long TV time outs. I suppose all of these issues probably go away if we have some momentum on offense.
I could go on, but that's about it from a mid-90s grad who is happy with the program but who can see some tweaks are probably needed. GO Tigers!

How many times have we pinned an opponent inside the 10th this year? I’d bet SC did it more yesterday than we have all year. And that rugby punt is terrible 9 times out of 10.

I have to disagree on starting DJ at any position other than tight end or punter. Watching him in person shows his inability to read a defense. At all. Two years of zero coverage and he refuses (or isn’t allowed) to kill the run and throw a hit route. When I played QB, I salivated when I saw zero coverage. Even in the 80’s I had the freedoms to tap my helmet to alert the receivers to run 9 routes. Any receiver even is leaving! I’d throw it up and give them a chance. I’ve seen play after play if receivers with a full step on zero coverage and DJ refuses to throw it. If he does, it’s a check down and usually the covered check down. Or, he runs it. The receivers get frustrated and stop working. Why should they work to get open when the QB is a statue?! The reason you see a spark when Cade comes in is he will give them a chance to make a play. Even with lower quality receivers. On the audio system: you’re really out of touch. Rap and R&B make up 97% of the playlist. I’d like to hear more CEO’s cultural hits that gets everyone loving. Everyone. The investment made is perfect and makes the game day experience better. TV timeouts. There’s not a #### thing anyone can do about those. They are contractually obligated at predetermined increments throughout the game. SMH. It’s part of the game that will only get worse. Deal with it. No one has the power to change that except the marketing director for the network. Tangible changes; hire a proven star OC and DC. Goodwin is a great analyst. He’s made an elite, NFL caliber defense pedestrian. Streeter needs to be passing game coordinator and give a super star OC control of the plays. Dabo needs to stay out of the play calling. He should make suggestions in certain situations. But, trust your coordinator. Qb: we needed to start playing Cade game one. 50% of the time or more. By now, he should be in the Heisman conversation and we should be in the playoff hunt. We have good enough receivers to compete with anyone. Dabo mixing his children into the lineup does no one any favors except the other team. I love his family, however, none are D1 athletes. Playcalling: we need to use tempo, window dressing, smoke and mirrors, plays designed to free up playmakers in space. We play with great hubris. We line up and do what we want to do regardless. It doesn’t work. When we find something that does, we don’t use it. Chiefly Shipley averaging 8+ yards per carry and he touches it less than 25 plays a game. We need someone tracking touches. Tight ends 12 per game. Deep shots, 10+ per game. Especially after a quick change turnover near mid field. We need a QB that makes the routine plays easily. DJ makes routine look hard and rarely connect the layups. He has flashes and makes impossible look easy a few times a game. We just need consistency. Finally: the transfer portal and NIL. Use our wealth of boosters to build a strong NIL so our players can say:”I am a business, man!!” Instead of having to be businessmen which takes away from training time. Texas A&M has bought the best players money can buy. It will pay dividends. We must follow suit or become irrelevant. Look what Lincoln Riley did using the portal. Instant playoff team. Hubris is killing us along with nepotism. That’s a microcosm of the issues. Strength and conditioning, player development, and recruiting busts weren’t mentioned. We have MANY issues keeping us from being what we were in 2016 and 2018.

You’re an investor. I’m an investor. If you’re looking for return on money do you except anything other than the best? When your wife or husband does something wrong do you keep your mouth shut?! When I see an issue, I point it out BECAUSE I am INVESTED. Get invested! I’d much rather hear someone call a spade a spade rather than be Eeyore and accept when the best is NOT the standard anymore.

I'm not sure I'm either a P/D-umper, but with any good change management process, here's what I'd do:
1. Evaluate patterns of success/failure. 2. Identify what actions lead to success/failure. 3. Make actions that lead to failure turn into actions that lead to success.
If you're asking me to make a guess, I'd say this...
1. It starts with recruiting. 2. Next up comes development of players. 3. Finally, it's maximizing the strengths of the players that give you the best chance to win the game.
I'm sure there are failures in all three of those areas. The last thing we need to do is a complete overhaul. We're doing something that's working (just ask the rest of the NCAA not ranked in the top 15)....just need a refinement.
