So why exactly would anyone want to be a ref?

Everyone hates you, you have to make very difficult calls, you get yelled at all the time and cursed at, I mean it doesn't sound like too much fun. Are there some kids who just grow up wanting to referee games for a living? I doubt it pays too well, either. Just wondering.

A lot of referees do it as a side job. I think most of the NFL refs are doctors and lawyers and such.
They also GET PAID to watch football closer than anybody in the stadium. I wouldn't mind that part too much.

I mean they only work on the weekends, usually, with the occasional week game. (In football that is)

The kids who get picked last in 1st grade recess kickball grow up to become either cops or referees.. Or turn out to be the brilliant millionaire 'nerd'.

To help their teams to win games. Plus I hear that swoffy gives a healthy greased palm hand shake to the poorer refs when uncheaterassholes and dookie plays!!!

That NFL refs get paid nearly 200k a season, as well as having other jobs ( Ed Hochuli is an attorney in Baltimore), I now realize that I want to become an NFL ref. I'll just soak in my brand new jacuzzi drinking champagne to forget about the 4 hours of emotional beating...

loved EVERY SECOND of it. Also did rec league hoops and football. Nothing like the pressure those guys that do college sports are under though. I'm glad that there was no replay at the games I did!
If you love the game, you have the best seat in the house when you umpire home plate. You have to love the game though and not just do it for the money.
I refereed a rec league basketball championship game [11 and 12 age group] in which one team had David Young [future Clemson player], and the other team had Everick Sullivan [future Louisville player] and Hal Henderson and Bruce ? [future Furman players]. Of course the team with the three future college players won, but you could tell then that all of those guys were going to be great players. Fun game to ref and had absolutely no problems, partly because the level of play was so good.
Officiating sports can be a lot of fun most of the time, especially at high school levels and below where the pressure is not so bad. Some rec league stuff can be a little rough due to some of the coaches/fans having a lot of red on their neck.

football ref with the ACC, and he once jokingly asked my opinion of officiating.
My response: "Is it really true that none of you have Momma's?"
We laughed heartily, then proceeded on with our round of late afternoon cocktails. Bob and his wife were great people and friends; however, we rarely discussed his secondary vocation...which was probably wise on both our parts! lol

http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/ncaab-the-dagger/college-basketball-refs-hustle-pay-212006385--ncaab.html
Even if you take the low end of the payscale ($1000 per game) and the average number of games worked by the Top 200 refs (52) they are essentially making $500 an hour.
The big conferences like the ACC aren't paying the minimum (the article says the ACC's going rate is $3000 per game) so you are talking about $1500 an hour. I would be willing to take a ton of abuse for $1500 an hour.
