I've gotta give Arnold credit here. He was brilliant and his stuff was working well. He surrendered the 1 run early, but after that he completely shut Clemson down. He allowed only 3 hits his whole outing, 1 in the 1st, 1 in the 3rd, and 1 in the 7th. He pitched 7 complete innings, and especially from the 4th through the 6th he had the Tiger hitters completely fooled. He did give up that last hit in the 7th, but then stranded him to end the inning. FSU then went to the bullpen for the start of the 8th. So the reality was the Arnold actually had a fantastic outing, once again 1 run on 3 hits in 7 complete innings. You can't ask for much more than that from your starter, especially considering how well Clemson's lineup had been hitting prior to that.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with riding your starter when he's pitching that effectively. Going to the bullpen in that situation is really just doing your opponent a favor. Plus, it saves your bullpen. Arnold put the 'Noles in great position to win the game, and Jarrett was smart to leave him in for as long as he could go. Clemson only got their rally going once Florida State went to their bullpen. So if I was Arnold's father, I wouldn't be mad that Jarrett let Arnold pitch deep into the game, I'd be mad that the bullpen couldn't get 6 outs with a 7-run lead. Arnold and the offense gave them what should've been a virtually guaranteed win on a silver platter and they couldn't cash it in.
