Why are we limiting DW4 is the passing
Oct 5, 2015, 10:09 AM
|

Game? Do we not trust our pass protection, our WRs, or is DW4 just not comfortable yet? I know missing Williams and a true freshman at LT plays into it as well. Once we get that back on track we are going to be scary good. It just seems like playcalling is handcuffing DW4 and we dont trust him to win games(UL and ND) through the air. Hopefully we can turn it loose vs Tech!

1- We havnt NEEDed to yet
2- UL was playing deep all night
3- Rain at ND
4- some of everything you said between pass protect and WR's
I do think we see more from DW4 against the nerds

actually if you watched the game you'd realize that it greatly hindered their passing game outside of hitting a few big plays when they were down by 3 scores and had no choice but to chance throwing it....

They also got some big chunk plays. The coaches admit they got too conservative and part of that was limiting the passing game.

It was pretty obvious the rain affected both sides passing...both QBs were missing high which is an indicator of the ball slipping out of the QBs hand. On the TV pregame show DW mentioned his hands are so large when the ball is wet he only holds the ball with his fingertips for fear of squeezing the ball to hard and it popping out of his hands. We hold on to the two dropped INTs and Artavis hauls in his catch this isn't even a conversation.

One thing is for sure ....
Oct 5, 2015, 10:35 AM
|
|
The play calling gave us less of a opportunity to turn the ball over late and this is certainly a good thing. An int. or fumble late would have lost this game for sure and the Tigers did not do that. ND did .... four times and they LOST the game. Good coaching. My only gripe is we were not able to get just one first down in the last few possessions and that kept us from putting the Irish away. Missing the last field goal hurt also. Hope we can fix that.

My guess is that Dabo will review the offensive play calling.
I am holding judgement until after the GT and BC games. I am looking to see a more aggressive approach.
Our offense will need to be better to beat Miami, NCSU, FSU and SC.

SOS is not a defensive coach. The Coots problems start on the defensive side of the ball.

Game planning isn't that simple.
Oct 5, 2015, 10:37 AM
|

Sometime (Chad Morris) you plan mostly for your strengths but when your offense is truly balanced you plan for your strengths and the other team's weaknesses. Playcalling is determined by more than one factor too.
If you're planning on blowing somebody out then you might want to plan on pulling for a team that isn't coached by a third generation Bear Bryant son.
Fans have no clue what these coaches don't trust. We've won four game and we've seen a lot but I don't think we've seen all that they trust.

If you watched the postgame interviews

and I'm guessing you didn't... Jeff Scott said they intentionally avoided the midfield passing game, because if you tip it, or it slips through hands that is an easy turnover. So we passed to the boundary a few times, but otherwise stuck with the run game.

I guess some people just need to question why we arent winning by bigger scores. Fault has to be found somewhere why we arent winning 73-0 against a Top 10 team.
Putting it simply, you play to win every game and every game is not going to be 400 yards of passing through the air. ND threw out of desperation, they couldnt run the ball. We played conservative on both sides of the ball in the 4th quarter. Most ND's passing yards came after the catch, not long passes. 200 of their passing yards came in the 4th quarter against our "prevent" defense.
Now, if northalabama thinks he can do a better job, apply for the position. If not, we are ranked in the Top 10, control our own destiny, enjoy the ride.

Re: Why are we limiting DW4 is the passing

Part of what limited the Louisville game was the play calling. It wasn't conservative as much as protective. We blocked 6 or 7 every throw. The pass Renfrow scored on was a 3 man route tree. In an attempt to keep DW upright, we limited his options. Trying to complete a pass to one of 3 is a lot harder than one of four/five, obviously.
The other part is right now, outside of Artavis, no one (read Peake and Hopper) is fighting for the ball in the air.

So you're not allowed to nit pick the atrocious play calling in both UL & ND games or you will get thumbs downed mercilessly.
We are playing Not To Lose for some reason and I have no idea why.
Playcalling is even annoying DW4.
