No, actually 1168 teams have been in the 16 team field. It was expanded to 16 teams in 1951. Thanks for the fun read.
With the current # of eligible teams, this places the Sweet Sixteen around the top 5% of division I programs.

Which expanded to 8 in 1941. So you are correct, my number needs to be amended. From 1939-1940 there were only a total of 14 teams between the two tournaments, so I will amend my figure to 1,358. Only 1,358 teams have ever done what we have just accomplished.

I'm saying you should treat it as you wish. NIT was a post season affair, but so were some others too. There was not a Sweet 16 in 2020.
