How exactly does NIL money work? Who gives $ to the athlete

Dec 14, 2022, 6:18 PM

Is it school sponsored, alumni sponsored, or what. The bottom line is who is writing a check to who? Thanks. There is lots of talk about NIL but never any detail of the how. My how mind is curious.
Go Tigers!

Class of ‘71. Went through “rat season” and glad I did.

purposes. The boosters and the actual football programs buying players are working together. They are not doing this independently of one another. No one is so naive as to believe that.

Boosters with lots of money. Those with businesses may make an endorsement deal. I bet there are a lot of small-time small money deals out there. OTOH, DJU surely got a boatload of money for his Dr Pepper commercials. Then there are the NIL syndicates where anyone can throw in money and then someone manages the collection making payments for whatever the players need to do (outside of pay-to-play) to earn it. It's kind of the wild west right now.

*not directly school sponsored because it isn't the school's money. But they can set up mechanisms that put potential 'sponsors' in touch with the players.

fchrisgrimm sounds like how I think it works. Three important pieces of the puzzle. Players will get a W-2 or a 1099 and have to pay taxes, money has always been paid under the table in high schools and colleges everywhere and that will not change, state schools use public funds and do not write checks but a Miami, Duke, etc, etc probably could, but the player would be considered an employee which means they don't. For regular people like me, NIL is no big deal since I have not seen 1 single commercial with a player since NIL started.

Well why is Neff asking for contributions regarding NIL if this was not a part of the school?

Not the school. Anyone else.

They are not allowed to “pay for play” but people are breaking the rules.

One: An organization legally separate from the school seeks donations from the fans and then pays that money to players to “endorse” something.

Two: a legitimate business pays a player to endorse their product. And they expect that by having that payer advertise for them they will get a legitimate return on revenue.

Three: small deals take place. For example, paying an athlete to come to your child’s birthday.

NIL is a result of a lawsuit. No one truly wanted it except the players. (People like Dabo said they wanted it after the writing was on the wall that it was inevitable).

The courts determined it is unlawful to deny someone the right to sell their own name. So the NCAA had to allow it.

A great explanation by Buffalo. I would add to it that these third-party entities and businesses are in direct communication with the head coach to find out what recruits the team wants and then these third-party entities will approach that recruit and try to negotiate a deal for them to come to the school..
