North Carolina Highway 138 is a 13.6 mile state highway that starts on the south end at NC 742 in Oakboro, goes through Aquadale, and continues to the north end at US 52 near Albemarle. Kellie Pickler is from Albemarle.

Last week, DownSouthTiger mentioned Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest near Robbinsville, North Carolina, a 3,800 acre section of the Nantahala National Forest in memory of poet Joyce Kilmer, known for the poem "Trees" and for his death in battle in World War I. It was dedicated in July of 1936. In 1975, the forest along with a larger section of the Nantahala in western North Carolina and the Cherokee National Forest in eastern Tennessee became the 17,394 acre Joyce Kilmer-Slickrock Wilderness. The area is known for being an old growth forest, which basically means it has developed itself over time without disturbance. Some of the trees in JK Memorial Forest are over 400 years old, 20 feet in circumference, and 100 feet tall. The forest has an easy 2 mile, figure 8 hiking trail with a memorial plaque at the intersection.

Thanks for the idea DST, didn't know about this forest.

My dad was from NC, so we visited Nantahala often when I was a child and older. I've been keeping up with the plans to allow more logging there and the hope that the influx of people doesn't kill another treasure.

My sister used to live in Albemarle. I didn't realize that Pickler chick was from there.

138 - WR Gary Cooper Also Rushed for 138 Yards

Former Clemson Sports Information Director Tim Bourret wrote the following about Clemson WR Gary Cooper (1985-1989) in 2015. According to his article on ClemsonTigers.com:

“I have been at Clemson for 38 years, and I am often asked my opinion on various superlatives of Tiger history. If someone were to ask me who I believed was the most underrated football player since I have been at Clemson, Cooper would be at the top of the list.

“Gary Cooper had great height, strength and speed,” explained McCorvey, now an associate athletic director in the Clemson football department who was Cooper’s position coach from 1986-1989.

“There is no doubt if he played at Clemson today, he would put up some incredible numbers. We were a team that was built on the run, but Gary could break a long play as a receiver or a runner.”

He never got the acclaim he deserved. For his career, Cooper averaged nine yards per carry. In 1988, he touched the ball 21 times and averaged 26 yards per play.”

According to Sports-Reference.com, Cooper registered the following statistics at Clemson. Of note, he redshirted in 1985, but he did play in two games:

WR Gary Cooper (1985-1989):
- 73 Receptions for 1521 Yards (20.8 Average)
- 11 Receiving Touchdowns
- 12 Carries for 138 Yards (11.5 Average)
- 2 Rushing Touchdowns
- 4 Kickoff Returns for 103 Yards (25.8 Average)

After Clemson:

After He left Clemson, tragedy struck. According to the Tim Bourret article on ClemsonTigers.com:

After totaling 504 receiving yards as a senior in 1989, Cooper was drafted by the New Orleans Saints and was the last wide receiver cut before the 1990 season. He then went to Canada and played for the Montreal Machine of the World League of American Football.

After that season, he returned home to Georgia. On June 1, 1991, he received a phone call from the Kansas City Chiefs, who signed him as a free agent. The day before he was to leave for Kansas City, he was driving on wet pavement in Georgia and was involved in an automobile accident.

Cooper’s injuries were significant, as he suffered traumatic brain injuries. He would never walk again.

After a long rehabilitation, Cooper attended a college in Pennsylvania near his hometown. He earned his degree in accounting, but the remaining years of his life were very difficult, as there were many complications as a result of the accident.

In 2003, TigerNet posted the following quote from Cooper:

“The toughest thing is not being able to, you know, play football or finish playing football,” he says from his wheelchair. “I felt like I had a chance to play in the pros.”

https://www.tigernet.com/clemson-football/story/tiger-insider:-this-gary-cooper-doesnt-have-his-hollywood-ending-yet-2968

Unfortunately, Gary Cooper passed away from medical complications in 2015. Very sad. Tim Bourret added:

I tell Gary’s story for two reasons. First, current student-athletes need to appreciate the time they have playing a game they love. Second, Tiger fans need to remember Gary Cooper and what he did for the Clemson football program in the 1980s.

He was a heck of a player.
