Here is an interesting rumor/speculation.

I'm not gonna post the link because I have no reason to believe the guy knows anymore than you or I know. He mentioned this in a post about ACC voting to expand. It came under, "What does this mean for the ACC going forward?"

Anyway, here it is. We can only hope it is true.

1. FSU and Clemson will join the SEC.
2. ESPN will let them out of their GOR, so they will only pay the exit fee to ACC (120 million?)
3. SEC will go to 10 conference games per year.

Reasoning:
1. ESPN wins because FSU and Clemson are in an ESPN conference. With 10 conference games, they get more quality match-ups every year. (Clemson/UGA, Clemson/FSU, Clemson/TN, FSU/UGA, FSU/Bama, etc. Note that those are just examples). Traditional rivalries are now conference games (FSU/uf, Clemson/coots).
2. SEC wins because as we move to the Super 2 it puts them in a much stronger position.

The one thing this guy claimed that makes me think he's just tossing out his idea and not saying he has any source telling him it will happen is that he says FSU and Clemson will be in SEC by 2024. I don't believe that is likely.
1. Why would ACC let them leave a year early?
2. SEC would have to scratch their 2024 schedule and start anew.
3. FSU and Clemson would have to drastically alter their schedules on relatively short notice.
I think 2 and 3 are doable, but I'm not sure 1 is doable.

This is a pipe dream and has zero validity.

I’d be all for a move to the SEC. Week in and week out would be a good game. Plus everything is close to home or somewhere I’d like to go. I hate going to NC State and GA tech

Acc is already creating new schedules for 2024 adding the Calsmord right?

This hurts to say but ESPN has nothing to do with the GOR. Their agreement with the ACC is the tv contract only. I think if they had a tie to the GOR they would have already made an agreement with the ACC.

^^^this. ESPN doesn’t have a day in letting us out of GOR contract with ACC.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Not sure why ESPN would pay SEC $$$ to Clemson and FSU

when they can pay ACC money now.

You forgot about UNC, who apparently also wants out

and is also the most attractive expansion candidate for the SEC or B1G.

They’re wanted, but they’re not the top choice. People who keep peddling this, like Finebaum, still believe conference expansion is about markets. One streaming came into play, markets went out the window and it became about eyeballs since you can watch a game anywhere in the country.

I used to think this as well but it's been explained to me that both markets and matchups matter. For instance, no current SEC team in North Carolina so ESPN makes 1 dollar per cable subscriber, UNC becomes an SEC member now that dollar turns into 10. (Not real numbers but you get the gist)

Re: You forgot about UNC, who apparently also wants out

Sep 1, 2023, 12:29 PM

I think that's somewhat true, but the issue is how much market saturation is there now. I would assume most people already have a lot of these networks since they're typically bundled together in those add on sports packages, but again, I'm sure the networks and conferences have a better idea on that than I do.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

But ESPN gets different rates in different states. That's

Sep 1, 2023, 12:39 PM

the issue. ACC also stands to get boost in this regard if they can renegotiate Dallas/SF/Oakland/San Jose areas.

You are on the money. And UNC is one of the great brands

in athletics and high academics to boot.

With UNC also wanting to leave, feels like Butch & Spike

Geez…can’t Clemson get away from these guys once and for all time?

I’m not sure the SEC teams would want to play 10 conference games. They already claim they are beating each other up and costing themselves playoff positions and bowl games. And they would have to give up a lucrative home game against a non-power-five team every year. They haven’t even agreed to a nine-game schedule with Texas and Oklahoma yet, have they?

Sep 1, 2023, 12:09 PM

EspIn won't profit as much if Clemson and FSU move to the SEC. The SEC will expect and be awarded a much bigger paycheck being that the SEC's adding of two very profitable programs.

Also, the ACC takes a beating when E lets them know that Clemson and FSU leaving devalued the ACC product.

We saw E shut down viewing for Spectrum accounts about 2 minutes into the pregame stuff last night. Over the past few to half a dozen years we've seen E send popular talking heads to the SEC network. I believe a huge part of that was cutting the fat from their broadcast overhead. I expect more to come, Pollock talking about taking a HCing job...

Bret, I believe this is going to be a hard row to hoe for us.

I've felt all along we don't get out unless ESPN is willing to negotiate. Whether this is just more speculation or not, who knows, but it will take something like this to make the financials work out.

This doesn't make any sense.

There is no way ESPN is going to suck out the value of the ACC. If they were going to do that, they would have just stopped the ACC from expanding now.

FSU and Clemson want out. ESPN knows this. The BIG is interested in adding FSU and Clemson. ESPN doesn’t want to lose these two to BIG and Fox. I agree ESPN doesn’t want to devalue the ACC and they certainly don’t want to have pay more $$ to FSU and Clemson in the SEC. However, I believe they will in order to keep from losing those brands altogether.

The one tiny little thing you clowns have over Clemson and if it goes, you may never win another game against us.

I've heard this rumor as well. These people unfortunately don't know anything. If that were true Clemson and FSU would have been yes votes on their replacements.
