Hater or fair assessment?

Mar 23, 2016, 11:15 AM

https://twitter.com/JaysonBraddock/status/712408328698134528?lang=en
Keep in mind that this guy has a kid in a CJ Spiller jersey at the top of his twitter page so I'm not sure whether he's with the good guys or the bad guys. Personally, I disagree with the assessment. If guys get drafted where most folks predict, I don't think they are overrated at all. Dodd might be, but it's hard to ignore his production from this past year. Give Venables credit, but it's not like he's the one on the field whipping O-lineman, making tackles or sticking WRs. We finished #2 in the nation for a reason.

Braddock works for ESPN, but I think he's from Florence***

So then he isn't an NFL scout.

Got it.

A fair hater

Mar 23, 2016, 11:31 AM

Shaq, Dodd and Mack were properly rated. Kearse was way overrated. TJ, BJ, DJ (lol) and Peake were all underrated.

Snowflake Basher........Out

Kearse has been getting hammered by the talking heads

Mar 23, 2016, 11:41 AM

And is being projectd to go by most in around the 3rd round. I wouldn't call him overrated at this point in time. Maybe prior to the start of the season, but not now.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yea, that's what I meant. He WAS overrated.

Mar 23, 2016, 2:30 PM

Some people thought pre-season or even mid-season he could push for late 1st round pick, which was overrated. Now we know.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Snowflake Basher........Out

Well Put; he may even be rated a little low now

Mar 23, 2016, 2:59 PM

Kearse's pre-season and even early season hype had him over-rated. The thing is, he was playing well enough to justify that hype at the time. IF, and that's a big IF, he gets focused, the sky is the limit for him. Safeties typically don't go early, or earn the big bucks, but he can have a long and productive career if he matures.

These guys get burned by kids with talent, but not dedication. Couple that with the typical discount the NFL gives to the safety position, and that yields Kearse staying on the board probably until at least day 2. It seems I read somewhere that they were spreading the draft out over a longer period. Is it still first 2 rounds on day 1? If so, he won't last past day 2, but if they have the 2nd round only on day 2, he could slip to day 3.

Safeties, yes

Mar 23, 2016, 11:39 AM

The others.... just ask Bama

Re: Hater or fair assessment?

I'd say he is partially correct, as IMO do not think all of our guys were over rated. But recall, too, quite a few of the big plays against us last year were attributed to "bad schemes/alignment" - thus, was that the fault of DCBV; the failure of the players to execute; or the players inability to execute?

Who is Jayson Braddock....

Mar 23, 2016, 12:10 PM

and why should we, or anyone else for that matter, care what he says or thinks?

Sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together.

That could end up being a fair assessment down the road

Mar 23, 2016, 12:43 PM

but I don't see how you can make a call one way or another before they've even been drafted...

Re: Hater or fair assessment?

Mar 23, 2016, 2:03 PM

Lawson is not overrated, Dodd had a great season but was a career backup before that. Green needed more development but has potential and showed out in every testing category. Kearse hit a huge slump midyear and didn't test well. Alexander is as good as advertised.

On a slightly different note. Good coaches put good players in positions to be successful. Does the NFL not have good coaches? If they do then these players will be fine. Good players with bad coaches on bad teams become forgotten unless they break individual records.

In other words what he said is meaningless without 3-5 years of NFL tape to reevaluate. Lawson and Dodd CONSISTENTLY shed all-conference and all-american blockers to make an absurd number of TFL and good number of sacks. BJ could maybe be considered a player that isn't terrific but was put in good situations but I wouldn't consider him overrated since most think he is a late round pick. Reader missed half the season, Green was a 1 year starter, Alexander put up the best numbers of any corner and shut down several top NFL WR prospects. Kearse, sure he can have one. He is overrated but he took himself out of good positions with poor effort too often.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Isn't that the coaches job?

Mar 23, 2016, 2:17 PM

To recruit, develop, and identify how players can utilize their strengths while minimizing weaknesses on the field?

Like most questions, there isn't a clear yes or no answer. The coaches motivate and strive to put our players in the best position. The players also bust their tails each day to learn and develop, and hopefully give maximum effort.

While a player may not fit a typical blueprint, an NFL coach should also be expected to put the players in positions to succeed. It's clear Venables is better at it than most coaches in the NCAA. This helps our team, and also helps the players with higher draft positions if they 'exceed expectations'.

I'd rather have a team full of talented, high quality players who consistently overachieve, versus a handful of 'me first' superstars.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That would be great if he is correct..

Mar 23, 2016, 3:10 PM

because we keep recruiting better and better. It will be amazing what our d will be like in a bit when we have even better talent out there.
