It's Going to Take Elite QB play to beat us. Sorry UGA
Aug 19, 2021, 11:32 AM

Looking back at out last two big loses to LSU and Ohio State, both of those games had Elite QB play. Burrows and Fields were throwing perfect passes for the entire games and we couldn't stop either enough to catch up.
UGa has a good QB, but not elite. Unless they have a career day, average QB play will not beat us.
How will Uga's QB's handle relentless and exotic blitzes for the entire game? With is being the first game I suspect UGa's QB will look like a rag in dogs mouth.

I think their QB is a good bit better than average. From what I've read, his receiving corp is missing a couple of key guys but Georgia recruits so well, they shouldn't be hurting too badly at any position. Their QB throws and runs well. If he has an average game it will be because our D made him look average.

Material, plus his receiving and TE corps are devastated. He does has a great stable of NFL backs to help. If Kirbee gameplans wrong he will get crushed.

Not disagreeing, but remember that last year JTD had barely recovered from knee surgical repair and wasn't even approved to play early in the year. Does a healthy JTD perform even better than in last year's last 1/2 of season? Probably. Is that enough? Proof in pudding in two weeks.
The flip side of the coin has to do with DJU and new corps of receivers meshing quickly. Possible? Yes. Probable? Pudding!

I agree. I scanned some Dawg boards and they think they will win because they have so many quality RBs. They totally disregard the fact that we will have one of the best DLs around. And if your QB can't take the team and go . .how hard is it to stop the run>??

we will face this year. It's going to be tough for both teams. Our OL will need to play extremely well and we will need to run the ball. Ross will have a big game is we are able to run.

Everybody keeps talking blitzes. I think just rushing the front 4 is going to be enough to pressure their quarterback. Which ever one is left standing in the 4th quarter, will be the Tiger Meat for the cubs. Go Tigers.

Pickens was his big bail-out option, though. Arik Gilbert was supposed to fill that role in Pickens' absence but clearly that plan has hit some snags.
UGA's other receivers have also been beat up through camp and that 6'7" TE who wore #0 is also out for at least the Clemson game.
UGA also has some instability at LT and my understanding is the C is also limited by injury as well.
It has not been a good Fall camp for Georgia. Can Georgia protect Daniels in Week 1, and is he going to have anybody to throw to? Because right now the lack of bodies means it's going to be pretty easy to bracket Jermaine Burton and take away James Cook out of the backfield and without those two UGA doesn't have much left in the way of viable targets. UGA is certainly not going to beat Clemson with, say, Kearis Jackson, who is a decent slot guy but not any kind of massive weapon.

You are absolutely correct. Losing Pickens and not having Gilbert and Washington are big blows, but saying "UGA doesn't have much in left in the way of viable targets" is just plain wrong. The following talented youngsters are going to get their shots now and they are certainly "viable".
- #81 Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint - Came in the same class as Burton and was just as highly ranked. - #9 Justin Robinson - Has the size and speed to be that security blanket - #11 Arian Smith - In the conversation for fastest man in college football - #5 AD Mitchell - True FR that will be a star - #19 Brock Bowers - Will get some of Washington's passing reps. Superb athlete.
Also, you are correct. Keeping JT clean will be of paramount importance, especially if Clemson chooses to only rush 4 as someone else in the thread suggested. The OL will work itself out. There's plenty of talent there in order to be successful. The real question is can Clemson get pressure with just the 4 DL? If they can, then it's going to be a long day for UGA. If not, there is no QB better at diagnosing and capitalizing on a blitz in college football than JT.

Big Week 1 games are almost always about the established vets. The game hasn't slowed down yet for the young guys without much big-game experience and especially not the freshmen...the true froshes aren't likely to factor at all, not yours, not ours.
If Georgia is missing (or even has limited) their top 4-5 targets from last year their offense has some severe personnel issues. Period. The young guys aren't going to magically morph from zero into All-Stars overnight. Sorry...that doesn't happen.
If it was Week 6, sure, we could start talking about your young guys and I would start mentioning the massive potential of guys like Ajou Ajou...but I don't think those guys are going to decide the game much if at all; it's just too early and it's going to be moving too fast for them and the lights are going to be too bright.
Georgia needs to heal up and get some guys back but it's going the other way. Right now UGA has a massive problem at WR and there simply is no covering that up. Even your long-time vets are really, really worried about UGA's injury situation.
The only ones who think it's "all good" are the fanboys.

Maybe I am just being a fanboy, but the guys I've mentioned have been making noise in camp and they will only need to be effective enough to be compliments to Burton and Jackson in order to make the passing game work well enough.
We'll see soon enough though.

When you play teams...

with lousy defenses, that kind of stat can and often is over-inflated.
Six teams on your schedule last year had defenses raked outside the top 60 nationally and three of those were outside the top 80 (Florida at 83, South Carolina at 105 and Arky at 106).
Had you played Clemson last year, the Clemson defense would have been the best you faced, and this years defense will be better.
Good luck indeed.

Maybe. Maybe not.
Diagnosing blitzes is about putting in the film study up front and then recognizing and reacting, but it's also about scheme putting the QB in a position to be successful. To that note, this year will be year two in UGA's new offensive system, but in reality with all the missed implementation time in 2020 this was the first normal offseason of installation. Combine that with JT being the unequivocal #1 for the whole of the offseason, and you will see scheme play and even larger role this year.

Against poor defenses, scheme isn't nearly as critical largely because you can out talent them (block, throw, catch, and run) unless, of course, you're a 30 point favorite at home against uof6c and then lose.

So, we agree then. Scheme will be important in the upcoming game.
There's a ton of film on what Venables wants to do schematically with his personnel at Clemson. Conversely, there is much less on Monken with JT Daniels at the helm. Combine that with UGA being in the 2nd year of a new install, and you can bet UGA will be prepared for what Clemson wants to throw at them.

So, we agree again. Neither team will out talent the opposition in this one. That's why scheme is important.

Your initial post...

was about an irrelevant QB rating that was based largely on playing a bunch of lousy defenses.
The game next month will likely come down to coaching. You can judge for yourself which staff does the better job of developing and coaching its talent.

It's not always about blitzes for Clemson though. I don't think you quite realize how good this Clemson D line will be....it was better than UGA's was last year, per the F+/SP+.
And you may want to pay special attention the the three at the end...the sack rate rankings overall, on standard downs, and on passing downs. Don't forget, that D-line is the same one that hits the field this year...finally with a proper spring and fall.

I'm not surprised at those numbers as Clemson is a very aggressive defense. They are always at the top of the nation in sacks and TFLs.
Do you know if they break them down game by game? Meaning can we see how much the games against equivalent talent like Ohio State and to a lesser extent ND contributed to those values?

All things considered we will beat Georgia in this first game pretty much straight up. Our four man rush will beat their O line. Our LB's and secondary will handle their running game and match up best against their passing game. Only an occasional blitz will be utilized to shake them up a bit but in general our "whole" team will handle them man for man in this game. Our offense will have its way with our stable of running back variants, our backs out of the backfield, and the slew of tight ends and receivers they will be facing - all with of course a perfect blend of play calling to keep them off guard in all situations! Our coaching staff have done an excellent job in practicing to keep our team healthy and well-prepared to be able to control this game! Tigers 34-13! Sorry ESPN!!!!

All things considering, you are wrong. Our running backs will be matchup nightmares for you LB's, our OL will be fine if you only choose to rush 4 and our WR will beat your DB's.
Our DL will completely overrun your OL, you lost your best player from last years line to the draft.. amazing CU fans thinks just because they have one more year they will be that much better. Our DL is arguably the 2nd best in CFB, behind yours, if you compare total front 7's I say UGA has the advantage.
Though young and new our DB's have skill and will be fine...wow that's kinda like your OL argument. I guess fans wearing their school colored glasses look at things half full.
Go Dawgs.....UGA 37-21.

Two problems with your analysis
Aug 19, 2021, 4:20 PM
|
|
1. Your running backs are not the running backs of previous seasons. They are good, but not great.
2. Even a great running back looks average playing behind a deficient or mediocre OL.
