To be fair it was more of a popularity contest in 1999 , and less a decision made by people on a committee.
I would contend that it was more difficult to make the NCG then.

I mean are they us, no, but they do have potential and there are a lot of similarities.
I haven’t been to a game, but their campus is nice (I love the mountains) and I’ve heard their gameday experience is awesome. They also have a lot of in-state talent if they could just build that metaphorical wall around the state (granted I don’t want that to happen because we have such a pipeline there).
Would be interesting to see if their BOT, AD, and Coaches ever get on the same page.

For a while they were the ‘southern’ ruralish bully not from the SEC (actually before SEC became noun, verb, adjective, etc). And they were very good late 90s / early 2000’s when we kind of sucked.
I think it’s complimentary but then again I’m helluva a lot less tribal than most of you.

He's full of shyatt. They never won a Natty and probably never will. They got to one Natty game and got blown out in the fourth quarter. And of course, the interviewer is too gutless to interject. BTW, they've never made it to a playoff, and they may never end up top 12.

Saying never to something happening in sports , particularly in this current landscape of CFB is a bit short sided , don't you think ? Feels like now (so long as a team/it's boosters have money) that putting a great roster together (or one capable of winning it all) should be more possible than ever.

Very true. Guess my Tiger loyalty comes out a bit strong sometimes. You are right. We don't know the future. VT may have some great teams down the road. But they have not measured up to Clemson just yet.

Was in the Southern Conference until 1965. That means they were in a minor football league. When the biggest teams in the Southern Conference left that league in the 1930s to form the SEC the Hokies were not invited. In 1953 when the biggest teams in the Southern Conference left to form the ACC, the Hokies were not invited.
Frank Beamer was easily the best coach ever at VT and he had the only really good teams in the history of VT. Despite this, during Beamer's great run at VT, Clemson had a winning record vs Virginia Tech.

I think that during most of their great run under Beamer had they not had to deal with Miami every year they may have gotten over the hjmp , but no way to know for sure. Miami usually beat them in those last few Big East years. Or they'd lose to a WV or somebody.

They might want to try having a recruiting class ranked well above 40th. Seems like the last 5 or 6 years they have finished around that.

VT fan here.
I don't think coach meant any disrespect at all.
I understand what he meant, but it is way off the mark. We had a really great run, and considering where we came from (absolutely nowhere), and the built in disadvantages we had, what Beamer did in Blacksburg was truly incredible. I'm not sure if many other coaches could have done what he did given the blunt tools he had.
I'm super proud of that, and there's no shame at all in saying nothing we did during that 20 year run approaches what Clemson has accomplished under Dabo. It's really not comparable. We never got over the hump. We knocked on the door but never really got through. We beat a bunch of big names, but not in many big games.
We were way more similar to a Wisconsin or Michigan State than a Dabo-Clemson.
There was a time when there was a chance to make that jump to the elite, but it didn't happen, and the gap has only gotten larger with each passing year. Today's recruits were 5 years old the last time we had a program. I think we can be competitive for conference championships again, but the days of flirting with the top 5 are over in my opinion. I don't see that happening again in my lifetime. The talent is all funneled to a much smaller group of schools now.

When JMU and Liberty are better teams, you got a problem, but look forward to seeing them get better and at least being top 25 again.. But Clemson had that number since 2011, Hard to sell recruits on the past, when most of those players are now in their 40s, Need a coach like Dabo who can develop walk-on and 3 star talent, but in the current landscape it's going to be hard with NIL and the portal.. But can't blame the coach for name dropping Clemson to try to pitch recruits..
