Coots in full on meltdown mode...

Sep 28, 2014, 5:59 PM

Re: Farewell Gamecocks friends and fans.... Reply
Honest question, Pepsi:
I was there too for our 0-11 season and sat in the stands till the final whistle when we lost 59-0 to FSU once,
is this undying loyalty to an historically mediocre program at best something to brag about or be ashamed of?
All teams have down years but when they do most can point to past years when their loyalty was rewarded with some sort of championship and that past euphoria sustains them through the tough years. Heck, even Delaware has won 6 national titles in football in their division. What can we point to? Save for a 1969 championship in the mighty ACC. Heck, I was born in the 1970s.
We only get one go around on this merry go round called life, is it wise to pour time, money and emotion on a product that has provided so little return on investment when it comes to the ultimate goal for which it exists to achieve?
Just asking.
Many friends I know who went to Georgia or Alabama or even Clemson- think SC fans are worth pitying and laughing at- they don't understand our collective psyche that forces us to continue to cling to a program that has yet to reach any mountain top. Yet we take some kind of perverse pride in our loyalty. A psychologist probably has some fancy term for our collective neurosis. The team we adore continues to fall short on its ultimate objective- year after year and decade after decade- and we still pack the stands. Is that the Helsinki Syndrome or the Stockholm Syndrome? Gamecock fans should be studied by scientists wanting to learn how to engineer true blind loyalty in a species.

Huh?

We've got guys on this board who can tell you which arm their great uncle Billy Bob got shot in at Vicksburg and precisely how far the wound was from his elbow and you don't know that in 1933 under the leadership of the great Billy Lavel our Gamecocks went undefeated as 'champions' of the old Southern Conference?

Well, it was a 'co-championship' with Duke ... they were undefeated, too - and back then there was no 'conference championship game' ... but it happened!

I feel no pity.

We will win a NC before they do. I'm not certain Spurcock doesn't retire as a Gator.

That first post was from one of the smartest, I know

oxymoron smartest and Gamecocks do not exist I get it, but he truly gets it.Other fan bases do make fun of them and laugh and are the but of most jokes. I lived in Cootlumbia for what I call the greatest era in football when they went 0 for two years. It was sad but very entertaining. I would sometimes wish that they would win just 1 game so it would be fun in 5 points to party but then I would come to my senses and just laugh. I had 3 roommates in a big house in 5 points they all were athletes that played for USuC in the 80's and were well known to the fans for actually being good ball players and they are great guys. We would sit around on Sunday nights and they would just laugh at how incredibly bad the Shamecocks were. When would would go out of town and meet people out they would recognize their name and ask if they played and 9 out of 10 times they would lie and say no, but have been mistaken to be that person before. Think about that, the school that you played for is so bad that even after you have graduated you do not want to be associated with the school. That pretty much sums up the Gamecock experience.

The 1933 DUKE team would've destroyed the Coots***

Pitiful. This guy references a 1933 SoCon title when not

Sep 29, 2014, 9:28 AM

even the SoCon recognizes them. The SoCon gave the title to Duke in 1933. In fact Washington & Lee had a better record than SCAR that year as well.

SCAR does play Furman this year so maybe if they win they can claim a piece of the 2014 title as well.

Just wait till they lose to Kentucky.

Sep 29, 2014, 9:28 AM

And eventually Clemson.

After all the crap they spewed over here after FSU,

Sep 29, 2014, 9:33 AM

I'm not surprised they're ready to grasp onto any slippery handhold they can find.

Hey, should we go to their site and make fun of them for losing a game they had in the bag, while at home?!?!

Nah, I'll leave that to their pathetic fans. Go Tigers. Tuesday's with Cali can't come soon enough.

Clemson

That's the only respect I have for them.

Sep 29, 2014, 9:34 AM

They are a trashy program with trashy fans but they show more loyalty to their program than most top 25 teams.

I have to respect that about someone who can love the unlovable. It's almost Godlike. To love a program which has almost no redeeming qualities must be divine.
