That report about the SEC not wanting to further expand is BS, and if they could add Clemson, FSU and Miami they would in a heart beat, not tied to ND and their moves. He’s pretty convicted with this take just like he was when he reported the BIG and PAC 12 canceling the season— and he got pretty beat up for it back then until it happened. Take it for what it’s worth, he’s been pretty spot on with this stuff.

I believe him. It's that nasty GOR that is holding up the process.

conference expansion is wrapping-up and coming to and end is being naive and simply lying to themselves.

It’s just the SEC fans hoping it’s true. Conference expansion is far from over and Clemson will wind up in either the SEC or B10.

I do not like the idea of Clemson just joining the B10 but the Idea L.Swan had the other day on his show would be awesome if it happened (don’t think it will BTW). B10/ACC merger. B10 gets every ACC team and that puts them at 32 teams if they add ND and Oregon. That gives them a lot of good markets and honestly makes them more powerful than the SEC.
By doing this we could keep playing regionally(for the most part) and we’d have to go into a new type of playoff/conference championship system.

No one that has made expansion raids on other conferences have talked about it prior. Ha. What do people expect them to say - that they are coming for other conference's teams.

Take a step back and you will easily see that a 16 member conference is much, much more manageable than 18.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

So conference expansion is over?

Jul 15, 2022, 10:00 AM

Also, nowhere in the OP did I see him say 18 is more manageable than 16.

Idk. I personally think 18 is more manageable than 16. Three divisions of 6 each (East, central, west). Play 5 permanent and 2 from each other division yearly. Can play everyone within 3 years.

Either 6- team playoff (top two, or division winners + 3 at large) or 4-team playoff (division winners plus top ranked non-winner).

Re: Dan Patrick just said his source said

Jul 15, 2022, 10:01 AM

It's hard to fathom that anyone would actually think conference expansion is over. Some simple common sense could alleviate that silly thought. Why on earth would USC and UCLA in LA ever agree to join the B1G in ALL sports if they knew that the only team within 1500 miles of their campus would be the other. No way would they be able to have Olympic sports traveling a minimum of 1500 miles to play every conference opponent except their expansion partner. That wouldn't work. They know the B1G will snag up some sort of combination of Stanford, Washington, Oregon, Utah and Colorado if not all.

I think it’s obvious that Clemson would be desirable to either the SEC or B1G….

The problem…as many have stated is the GOR…and the pricey exit fee

Clemson’s attorneys have no doubt reviewed the GOR in great detail…if there’s an out and our new conference will help foot the exit fee bill then we’re in business- we probably need both things to happen…

Re: Dan Patrick just said his source said

Jul 16, 2022, 5:13 PM

Is it really a problem? There is always a negotiation. The sticker says the cost is $50M but like Maryland the actual payout would be much less. The thought is the SEC and BIG will payout approaching $100M per year where the ACC payout is $30M ish. So the step up is $70M and the payout is likely $35M so the ROI is 6 months. So tell me again how the ROI is a big issue.

Re: Dan Patrick just said his source said

Jul 15, 2022, 2:06 PM

I have no idea if Patrick has any reliable source inside the SEC about what is actually going on or if he is just making a reasonable guess as to what is going to happen.

My guesses (and my only source is the internet)
1. No announcements will be made before Jan 15, 2023.
3. Sometime between Jan 15 and Mar 31, the following announcements will be made:
a. ND will join the B1G.
b. FSU and Clemson will join the SEC.
c. Other schools will be joining the B1G and SEC, but I'm not confident enough to specifically name any one of them.

All nonsense…

Jul 16, 2022, 12:12 AM

Because people on here can’t do basic math and don’t understand how business works. Let me break this down for you:

Any addition to the SEC would also require added value of at least $187M. The SEC’s TV deal- with OU and Texas- is going to garner each school about $110M…and that’s feeding 16 mouths.

The ONLY school that makes financial sense to add- WITHOUT KICKING ANYONE OUT OR CHANGING HOW REVENUE IS SHARED- is Notre Dame. Notre Dame is likely the only school that would *increase* the per school share. Furthermore, even if you *think* Clemson is worth that kind of money, ESPN ALREADY OWNS US with Swafford’s beautiful TV and the GOR. They are not maneuvering Clemson to the SEC!

Come on, folks.

Re: All nonsense…

Jul 16, 2022, 12:52 PM

Clemson v. SEC team >>> TV viewership than Clemson v. ACC team.

That's added value, many, many, more eyes mean more $$$.

It's not TV markets, it's how many eyes do you bring to the table. Clemson in an SEC schedule drives much higher viewership. That's way more valuable than an ACC schedule, even to the company that owns your rights.

Re: All nonsense…

Jul 16, 2022, 1:09 PM [ in reply to All nonsense… ]

ESPN is FINE with the move of Clemson and FSU to the SEC. That will do 2 things- 1. It will allow them to fend off Fox/B1G for these important teams, and 2. Allow them to cancel the ACC TV deal and network and SAVE money. 500 million a year for the ACC contract, then extra for the ACC Network which can’t find advertising. This would cost them a max of 400 million if 4 teams are brought over.

2024 purple level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Interesting take

Jul 16, 2022, 6:55 PM

ClemTig® ... Are you saying that ESPN may/should tale an active role in matchmaking currently desirable ACC schools with other conferences? And if ESPN matches enough schools, they will not be responsible for paying Duke, Cuse, Wake, BC, GT and possibly others for little watched crappy ACC games played by averagely talented players? Interesting approach.

Played basketball in high school against Dan Patrick. He went to Mason High School (Cincinnati area) class of 1974. He was a big guy power forward/center and was very good.

Here is where the story gets good...His real name is Daniel Patrick PUGH. Dropped the last name to be famous I guess.
