ACC expansion will HELP CU

Feb 5, 2015, 10:17 AM

At first, I thought expansion would be the death knell for our basketball program, but now I believe differently.

Look at the number of close games (5 points or less) this season and the fact that UNC and Duke are not the top dogs as much, and it makes for more parity. CU will pick up even more top level talent because of Brownell and the chance to compete in unquestionably the best BB conference in the country. We are competing well each and every night with more and more teams both inside and outside the conference.

I have the confidence in our program that I haven't had in years! My hat's off to both Coach Brownell and the team!

Go, Tigers!

I agree with your post but would add: The coaching staff urgently needs to do so serious coaching about shooting free throws! J. Blossingame, for example, stiffens his knees when he shoots a free throw which is the same as a reverse pivot in golf. He will never be any good shooting them until he is taught the concept of bending his knees and have flexibility. He's just one of many on the team who I could personally beat easily in a free throw shooting contest and I'm retired. Last night it almost cost us the game AGAIN.

I was watching last night and thinking, "why are his knees locked when he is shooting a free throw?"

Not sure why these kids don't shoot a jumper at the free throw line. The set shot is dead, except for old white guys like me.

It's good that you asked "What is Basketball?" An inquisitive mind is the first step to enlightenment.

I do not have the time to explain it all, but please know that it is a very strange game, played with a spherical ball on a flat surface. The nature of the ball and surface means that the ball bounces straight while a player progresses horizontally ... this is called dribbling. How anyone can keep up with such a ball/surface/bounce scenario is a great mystery ... for now just know that it is strange and is considered to be what the masses need to while away some of the time before the first kickoff.

It's certainly not unquestionable that the ACC is the best conference when the polls and computers do not agree with that statement at all. We're currently power rated the fourth best conference - http://www.usatoday.com/sports/ncaab/sagarin/2014/conference/. Pre-expansion the ACC set the record for highest percentage of teams to make the tournament in the RPI era not once, but four times, when 6 of our 9 teams made the field. Last year 6 of our 15 teams made the field. Expansion has been extremely bad for this conference. It allows Clemson to win more ACC games than we have in the past, but that is about all. Even after last nights win, a 6-4 ACC record, and winning 5 of our last 6 - we are 75th in RPI. That is nowhere near the bubble. The lowest RPI team to ever make the field was #67. 4 teams have ever made it with a +60 RPI. Clemson will not receive the benefit of the doubt from the selection committee that Marquette, NC State, or Southern Cal enjoy. To make the field Clemson is going to have to split with ND and beat either Miami or Duke. That means going 7-2 on the back half of the season and finishing 12-6 on the season. Even with that mark they would still be viewed as a last four in type team. That is not a heck of a lot of respect for the ACC.

Sorry, Here is the right link - http://www.usatoday.com/sports/ncaab/sagarin/2015/conference/. Results the same. 4th best conference in eyes of the computers.
