Basketball Funding in ACC where Clemson ranks

Mar 12, 2023, 9:19 PM

It is hard to find current info on amount colleges spend on their basketball programs but in basketball ACC is typically at the top of conferences on how much they spend. Several have said spend more on bball. It appears Clemson is low on the ACC totem pole on spending for basketball and below league average. Top 6 schools in Bball Spending are Duke-Louisville-UVA-Syracuse-UNC-Pitt. 4 of these schools are in the top 20 spending in nation in 2020-2021.

The most current available I saw was 2021:

Duke #3 in the nation at 14 million in 2021 (as coaches change like Coach K these totals would change)
Louisville spent annually $12 at #6 in the nation
UVA $10 at 14th in the nation
Cuse $10 at 17th in the nation
UNC $8 at 34th in nation
Pitt $8 at 35th in the nation
Miami $7.5 million at 40th in nation
NC State $7.5 at 43rd
FSU $6.7 at 57
Clemson $6 million at 68th in the nation
Wake $5.7 million at 76th and last in Acc
Furman $2.5 143rd in nation and made the NCAA

Other schools very close to us in Basketball Spending in 2021 USCGamecocks, Minn, Seton Hall, Kansas State, MSU, Wisconsin, Iowa, Dayton, VCU.

We spent 8.2 million on men’s basketball in 2019…

My understanding is we committed even more since then. I’m sure the exact numbers are out there.

Those numbers for everyone are lower due to the pandemic.

But that’s about where we land every year in terms of national ranking.

It has to improve if we want to be serious about basketball. Neff is saying all the right things and he’s off to a good start, but time will tell how much more emphasis will be placed on men’s basketball at Clemson moving forward.

Memphis is on this list, one spot behind us. Look what Penny Hardaway has done there with supposedly similar resources. Creighton is 7 spots ahead of us and their coach has taken them to like 14 NCAAT's. We keep hearing we don't spend enough but there are several teams that comparably spend to us on their programs and are much more consistent with getting their teams into the Big Dance.

I think good coaching really does matter ;)
