one of the more interesting articles I've read in awhile - it's TL;DR - but may apply to you and/or your family members. Even the Silicon Valley folks are starting to realize what a mistake they have made to society.
As I mentioned recently on here, some of my friends get pissed at me because I refuse to carry my phone around with me all the time, esp on weekends when I don't "have to". I hate cellphones and all they represent; they have some great applications, but are inherently bad IMO. Most people can't understand this.
Thank you Lord, for not afflicting me with the "phone addiction" gene.

everyone should be tied to work with a cell phone

at least for a few weeks. Have work call them in the most inopportune moments, causing plans to be changed/ended and subsequently causing problems with just about any and all relationships.
That has killed any interest I have in the technology. I've been tied to a cell phone for work since 1997. When I leave the thing at home, it's like being free from a leash.

irresponsible yet? I took my boat out last Friday afternoon and left my phone in the truck, I got to Clemson and started to think "man, if I broke down I wouldn't be able to contact anyone" like I wasn't being safe or something. Despite the fact that I spent my teenage years out there in a 14' jon boat with a 1970's Mercury that was all but guaranteed to break down every time you went out and no cell phone. Kind of crazy.

Also, the feeling that I'm going to get passive-aggressive behavior from the GF about not texting/calling even though I FB messaged her and told her I don't have my phoen.
I don't care, she's going to bachelorette weekend, I'm going to drink whiskey at the bar and might tag a ##### in the bafroom.

When cell phones came out, they were a status symbol that ID'd you as being successful and important.
Now, having the freedom to not carry a cell phone everywhere you go ID's you as being successful and important.

Yep, I'm with you on this. I've been referring to it as CPS

for several years now. People are stumbling through life in a Cell Phone Stupor. I recently went over 2 years without a cell phone, and only got one because I was having to do some business travel again. When I didn't have one, I didn't miss it at all. In fact, I may ditch this one soon...
You go to lunch and see 4 people sitting at a table, all looking at their phones, like they don't even know the other folks are there. You see people zig-zagging down the road, barely keeping the car in their lane. The light turns green, and nobody moves... that used to mean that some blue-haired grandma that can't see over the steering wheel was afraid to hit the gas... now it's the rule, not the exception. ####, I make Pittsburgh Lefts all the time now.
You pull into the Post Office and all the parking spaces are full. You're waiting patiently for a spot to open, and then notice that almost all the cars are running and people are just sitting there, staring at their lap. Hint: they're not admiring their genitalia. Pull in the gas station and all pumps are occupied... yep, just sitting there, with the drivers suffering from CPS. They just seem totally incapable of making their purchase and driving off...
I hate cell phones. They're making people stupid.

The most miserable people do seem to be those who use social

media the most, I see them on the lake, at tailgates, and out to eat all of the time. Taking pictures of themselves riding on a boat, sitting in the stands, or what they're about to eat. I can see how that would make you miserable, you never get to actually enjoy anything. I've mentioned it before, but the past two years at the beach I've seen people enter the fugging ocean, cell phone in hand. I cannot understand it. My wife is pretty bad about not putting hers down, she'll wear me down to watch some stupid show, and about 10 minutes in I look over and she's back on her phone.

Me too man.....I agree to watch some craptastic show with my wife, then look over, and she's looking at the phone while show is on. Then she'll go "Hey, why did Joe not let Betty get in his car" even though they just covered that in the previous scene. Once that happens a few times, I just flip it to something manly.

And really, I was kind of over it by about episode 5, but my wife continues to "watch" it, and by that I mean be on her phone and then about every 10 minutes look up and ask me what is going on.

My wife will put on some show like New Girl or some #### I don't care about and I'll immediately start reading something on my phone instead and when she looks up from her phone or finishes doing whatever she's doing on her phone she says "Ok, phones away so we can hang out with each other" which is really just watching a show IDGAS about. We're pretty good about staying off our phones and doing stuff together most of the evening, but once the tv goes on to one of her shows I lose all interest and would rather be reading something on my phone.

Sounds like a plan!

IMO this is the most important line of the article:

All of which, Williams says, is not only distorting the way we view politics but, over time, may be changing the way we think, making us less rational and more impulsive. “We’ve habituated ourselves into a perpetual cognitive style of outrage, by internalising the dynamics of the medium,” he says.
Yeah, there are a bunch of maladjusted folks out there. Wander over to the P&R board to see this up close and personal.

time someone started noticing. Check out this article, kids today are losing interest in everything... hanging out with friends, outdoor activities, partying, dating, having #####, etc. Don't even want a driver's license, would rather have their parents drive them around so they don't have to put the phone down. Missing out on life to stare 24x7 at that little screen...

I have a really good cell phone.

I have no service, instead I use the camera feature to document the work done while restoring the 85 MB.
In the 90s one of my bosses demanded I get a beeper so he could get in touch with me anytime. I refused and we had a heated discussion in which he threatened my job. Being the 'cool head,' of the two I suggested I get a cell phone and charge the bill to my job. He agreed.
The sumbich called me one Sat morning while I was fishing with my sons. I couldn't get a signal other than a ring and his phone number so I pulled the boat out of the water, drove to a pay phone and made the call.
He asked how I was doing. I told him the fishing was good but I hadn't had a nibble since I pulled the boat and drove to town. So no, I don't do talk and text.

Out in the boat, at a bar, sleeping, it doesn't matter.
We are 24x7 (but are not prepped to be) and expected to be available as the business pays for my phone. It's been like this since I've had a cell phone, at several jobs. It was either accept that, or get a different job.

I haven't. If the mofos want to talk to me they can call me at home. Imo, a man who can write can make a list of questions. Calling someone to inquire about a job during his personal time is an intolerable measure of laziness.
Texting to make such inquiries is even worse. I'm not anyone entertainment. I tell my kids if there is an emergency they need to dial 911. I ain't no doctor, fireman, police and I don't drive no ambulance.
They all know I got caller ID on my home phone and I'll return their call when I get ready to talk. I liken a cell phone or beeper to a ring in the nose.
