ACC Basketball Preseason Predictions vs. Reality
Mar 16, 2021, 11:31 PM

I decided to look back at the media’s preseason predictions for the ACC prior to the 2020-2021 season. I realize this is an in exact science, but it’s interesting to see how badly these 155 media members missed with some of their predictions for several teams (including us).
Predicted order of finish:
1. Virginia 2. Duke 3. Florida State 4. North Carolina 5. Louisville 6. Syracuse 7. Miami 8. NC State 9. Georgia Tech 10. Clemson 11. Virginia Tech 12. Notre Dame 13. Pittsburgh 14. Boston College 15. Wake Forest
Actual finish:
1. Virginia 2. Florida State 3. Virginia Tech 4. Georgia Tech 5. Clemson 6. North Carolina 7. Louisville 8. Syracuse 9. NC State 10. Duke 11. Notre Dame 12. Pittsburgh 13. Miami 14. Wake Forest 15. Boston College
Difference in actual versus predicted finish:
Virginia Tech +8 Clemson +5 Georgia Tech +5 Florida State +1 Notre Dame +1 Pittsburgh +1 Wake Forest +1 Virginia 0 Boston College -1 NC State -1 Louisville -2 North Carolina -2 Syracuse -2 Miami -6 Duke -8

But since we lost to #13 in the ACC tournament at the end, didn’t we really finish #14, or lower? Not that it matters.

Yes, that's definitely the tone of the TigerNet board.

All of the success we've had this year, and the good that has come of it, doesn't matter. No, all that matters is the one game this year we lost to a team we shouldn't have lost to.

Yeah it is. Wonder where you'd go to find out like the last 10 years. Get a better feel when all teams played the same number of games. Would bet a lot just like in football AP have no clue of what a team has or doesn't have.
Wonder how much the prediction mirrors the recruiting ranking for the year. Most probably do UNC and Duke like they do Bama and OSU, Wisconsin in football... Traditional good teams type thing.
Interesting information. Especially how they missed it on VA Tech and Miami.

If Miami didn’t all those major injuries they would have finished that high or higher.

We sure did as how did we not see that a 60+ year old SoCon coach of 20+ years would be sure fire winner in the ACC?

He also took over a program that was pretty good under Buzz Williams (26–9 Overall, 12–6 ACC, Sweet 16 in 2018-19). It also helped that this particular program was "home" for him, being ONLY a mere 24 minute drive from his home town.

Yeah and he's only 58, so not quite 60+ yet. Definitely didn't hurt that Buzz had just inked VA Tech's first top 20 (17) national ranked class in 2017.

Who'd have thunk it. Obviously VA Tech saw someone that could work within a system that had zero $ , very limited resources and build a program from the ground up. Which is what it takes at a football school. Wasn't like he was a one hit wonder and took a team to the NCAA.
Great guy who really knows the game and gets the most out of his kids. And of course, his very first win he beat us.
Speaking of which, can we claim him as Clemson material since he's part of Oliver's "coaching tree". Hmm.

Verdict is still out on Young - he needs a few more years and a full season. A few coaches can have a decent start and then fade. Plus, he needs to have a tough schedule first.
VT's schedule was MUCH weaker than ours in conference.
We place ACC Tourney Teams 10 times going 5-5, others six times going 5-1 VT played ACC tourney teams 5 fimes (going 2-3) and non dancing teams going 7-1
We literally played the toughest in-conference team TWICE compared to Tech. If you would normalize our season to theirs
We would be 5-5, 7-1 or 12-6 in conference. They would be 4-6, 7-1 or 11-7 in conference.

Yeah avoiding at FSU, at UNC, at UVA Host UofL, Host UofL, and at NCSU
They were looking at a schedule that IF they went 3-3, would have been epic for them. More likely 1-5 or 2-4.

of most impressive to least impressive season?
If so, UVA gets a “0” and is ranked 8th because they were expected to be the best and they were the best.
