Christmas is coming ... "What was your fondest Christmas present as a kid? "

My favorite Christmas present was a puppy whom I named Jingles. The puppy coincided with my only white Christmas - a surprise 2 inch over-night snow in Spartanburg. Jingles was my childhood dog and like the saying goes "man's/boy's best friend." That day was awesome; playing with my puppy, sledding, and snow ball fights with my neighborhood friends. The only negative was my Dad's decision to place Jingles in my Christmas stocking. Sooooo when I came into the den on Christmas morning I saw the puppy looking out from my stocking. I screamed with delight and quickly grabbed him. In all the joy and excitement Jingles peed in my stocking. Later that day I noticed all the hard candy in the bottom of my stocking was gooey and stuck together. It still tasted good to me and my cousins who came over that night.

Mine was probably my first stereo. A Sears catalogue special, AM/FM

radio and a fancy FOLD OUT turntable, with two separate speakers that must have been all of 6" woofers with some paper tweeters. But, it was MINE. I used to fall asleep to the old fading in and out WLS FM from Chicago, Illinois, that would come in all the way down here in South Carolina on clear nights.

#1 My first real bike at age 5.
#2 My first basketball goal at age 6.
It's been downhill ever since.

Nothing with dog pee on it though, thank goodness, it would have ruined the stick.

And a Commodore 64 for another Christmas.

I did get a collector Clemson Barbie one Christmas, and I wasn't sure how to react to it. I still have it in case I need to sell it.

1971 Sears and Roebuck Funderbird go-kart. I had dreamed about getting one of those from the first time I saw it in the catalog. I would beg my parents to go to the old Sears building across the street from The Spartanburg Memorial Auditorium, just so I could gaze upon it thru the window of the tire department window.

A Daisy Red Ryder BB rifle. We were poor and we only got one Santa gift and it was the only thing we got all year. So, we learned to take care of our "toys".

Every year I'd get a football game. The electric football games came and went, but one year, there was a game that folded out to a 4' by 8' field. The players were probably about 5" tall. The offense had a running back on wheels that you wound up and pointed toward the goal, and the defense had two defenders on wheels that you'd push toward the wind up running back and try to knock it over.

Had a freaking blast with that game. Hadn't seen one like before or since.

That game tops the list because I was probably 8 years old.

1981 Orange Bowl tickets were pretty sweet as a college sophomore though.

Christmas 1971. Santa gave me a 1972 Yamaha JT-2 motorcycle. Been hooked since that day. Worked in the motorcycle industry from 1974 until 2021. Still love it, and still ride now. Made a lot of great friends over the years that enjoyed my same passion. Biggest thrill has been riding with both of my kids, and watching my grandkids enjoy the same experience.
