Micah Matthews of Turner Ashby High School (Bridgewater, Va.) – a top-100 national football recruit and highly regarded baseball prospect – is set to visit Clemson for the football program’s March 9 junior day. “I’m really excited. I feel like I can do well and develop at both sports at Clemson. The baseball team has constantly been competitive in the ACC, and I enjoy the current style of play in both sports. So needless to say, I’m excited to get a close look at the football since I’ve already seen a lot of baseball.”

An outfielder on the diamond, Matthews originally committed to South Carolina for baseball back in 2020 before decommitting from the Gamecocks this past September after interest and attention from various football programs ramped up. The 6-foot-3, 205-pound junior has been in contact with the Clemson baseball staff since he decommitted from South Carolina. He’s being recruited as a wide receiver for football, and he has also been staying in touch with Clemson receivers coach Tyler Grisham and the Tigers on the football side.

“I’ve been in contact with the HS director for about a year off and on,” Matthews said, “and then he directed me to the WR coach, and we’ve been chatting for several weeks now.” Matthews is rated as a four-star football prospect by multiple recruiting services including 247Sports, which touts him as the nation’s No. 61 overall prospect in the 2025 class regardless of position. As a junior in 2023, he recorded 86 receptions for 1,476 yards and 16 touchdowns.

Matthews plans to play both football and baseball at the college level. “I have offers from a lot of the top (baseball) programs in the country,” he said. “As a baseball player I believe I’m a mix of power and speed – lots of extra base hits and stolen bases.

“Football, I feel like I’m a good blocker, good hands, fearless, tracking ability and speed.”
Since the beginning of this year, Matthews has racked up football offers from schools like Kentucky, Virginia, Maryland, Rutgers and NC State to go with previous offers from Virginia Tech, West Virginia and North Carolina among others.

An offer from Dabo Swinney’s program would mean a great deal to Matthews and have a major impact on his recruitment. “Instantly in my top schools if an offer happened,” he said, “but I have a lot of love and respect for the program and I’m excited to meet and know the staff.”

I can't get excited about 2 sport stars coming to Clemson. It seems like they take up space on the football team until they decide to concentrate on the other sport - usually baseball. I also can't get excited about football prospects from California. If Micah Matthews comes to Clemson, then I hope he will make me more excited by disproving my expectations.
