ESPN updated its 2020 recruiting assessment and Clemson’s class fell two spots since their latest team rankings, trailing Alabama and Ohio State now.
Clemson has 15 of its 20 commits rated in the ESPN300, with the No. 1 or 2-rated defensive end (Myles Murphy), defensive tackle (Bryan Bresee and Demonte Capehart) offensive tackle (Mitchell Mayes), running back Demarkcus Bowman and quarterback (DJ Uiagalelei). Bowman moved up two spots in the latest rankings to the No. 2 RB spot and top-20 overall (19). Bresee moved up two spots to No. 4 overall, joining Myles Murphy in the top-5 (3). Five-star targets Jordan Burch (5; No. 3 DE) and Justin Flowe (7; No. 1 ILB) remained in the top-10. Clemson was still No. 1 in the 247Sports Team Composite rankings (304.23) as of Tuesday afternoon, ahead of Alabama (298.49) and Ohio State (295.81), with the Tigers still leading the way for Rivals.com (2,900 points to Ohio State’s 2,805; LSU third and Alabama fourth) and 247’s own rankings having it Alabama then Clemson and Ohio State. “The race for the No. 1 class is still far from settled,” ESPN writes, “but the battle for the top spot is as competitive as we've seen in recent years -- narrow margins separate the top classes. Recent pickups, along with the release of the updated ESPN300 player rankings, ignited some key changes... “Clemson may have the best No. 3-ranked class ever, and with a few uncommitted five-stars still in the mix, the first No. 1 class under Dabo Swinney is still very much within reach.”
