TigerNet Talk #90: The Eyes Have It - 9/30/10

In what could turn out to be a preview of the ACC Championship game, Clemson and Miami open their respective ACC schedules this Saturday in Death Valley. Everyone knows the recent history. It's too hard not to mention the fact that the past three meetings have been thrilling overtime games, with the road team taking the victory.

Both of these teams have already had a chance to make a statement nationally, only to fall short on the road. Miami brings tradition, legacy, a brash nature, and attitude to this game. In the old days, I would have feared Miami punching Clemson in the mouth and watching the Tigers cower down to the Hurricanes.

But this team seems different. Maybe the attitude we saw in Auburn was a farce, but I think it's far from it. Dabo Swinney seems to carry that "it" factor with him and it's transfered to this ball club. You could see his passion for the team on display in Auburn and they want to win for their head coach.

They believe, so why shouldn't we? I can't give you a single reason not to. Forget the past. Forget the previous letdowns. Things appear to be changing in Clemson rapidly. Death Valley appears to be its old self again. I think the fans will prove that again on Saturday as well.

This weekend it will be the eye of the Hurricane against the eye of the Tiger.

Look in Clemson's eyes at the top of the Hill, just after the rub Howard's Rock.

The eyes will tell it all.

Expect to see focus and confidence.

They're hungry.

TigerNet Talk #89: Tough Times - 9/23/10

To put it lightly, Clemson and Auburn delivered a great game on Saturday night. As a fan, I found it hard to be upset at what we saw on the field. Yes, I know we lost, but Clemson looked like the tougher team. The opening drive of the ballgame showed all you need to know about this ball club; they're hard nosed, determined, and execute well.

I don't take losing lightly, in fact, it's not an option. However, something felt different about this game. I can't put my finger on it, but this team seems to have that "it" factor that you look for in very good teams. I don't think anyone will disagree, the "it" comes from Dabo Swinney.

It is clear to me that Coach Swinney has this team dialed in like we haven't seen in years. There is a confidence that I've missed in our program, but it is returning.

Even so, I contend we have to win a game like that before we can officially say, "Clemson is back." The wheels could still fall off in ACC play, but I doubt it. This team looks hungry. They look like they expect to win. They appear to be prepared and well coached.

Did losing this one hurt? Of course, but this team might be tougher for it.

TigerNet Talk #88: Breaking Through - 9/16/10

Clemson had two games to get tuned up for the real season and it kicks off this Saturday in prime time on ESPN. While there are still plenty of questions to be answered this year, Coach Dabo Swinney and Clemson could add a lot of credibility to the program by beating an SEC foe on the road early in the year.

It's been a long time since Clemson beat an Auburn team. You have to go back to 1951 to find the last Clemson win in the series. You could say we are due. However, a loss at Auburn and not only would the ACC take another hit, but most people would feel like they are seeing the same old Clemson team. Good enough to win most games, but not the big ones.

Controlling the clock might be the biggest factor in this ballgame. Cam Newton looks to be headed towards a great year and Clemson would serve itself well by keeping the ball out of his hands. Newton has been effective in the mid-level passing game, but it's been his feet that have done the most damage this year.

Tune in to see if your Tigers have enough to beat their Tigers on the road this Saturday.

TigerNet Talk #87: Feeling Blue? - 9/9/10

Did the opening game get you down about the Tigers? Were you expecting to see more from the offense? Missed tackles were an obvious issue on the defensive side of the ball. Don't fret, improvement is on the way.

What can we learn from the game against Presbyterian, plus how do the Tigers motivate themselves for what is essentially a tune-up for Auburn? Find out in this week's episode of TigerNet Talk.
