Get Over It
Get Over It
I just don’t get it. Let’s all prance around on eggshells so as not to ever offend anyone ever again.
I should not engage in this silly topic of Vic Koenning’s comments but since everyone else on the planet is then I will add my two cents.
I am almost as offended that Koenning backed off of his statements and apologized for making a joke.
We live in a world today where everyone takes everything so serious that we can’t even have fun anymore.
It was a stupid statement that probably should have never been made but it is not a big deal unless you consider that we have a seemingly endless internet to fill with stupid stuff and 24-hour a day sports talk that has to be filled with something.
As a Yankee fan I see this all of the time. Is A-Rod dating Madonna? Who said what in the closed door team meeting? It seems those New York tabloids spend so much time on meaningless crap.
I have decided that my life is too short to waste too much time on meaningless issues.
We find out today that Koenning does not go to cars.com and needs some help distinguishing the difference from a Cadillac Escalade and a GMC Envoy. We find out that one of the players he was talking about actually did get in a high dollar SUV but he was only renting it for the prom.
Let’s have a public lynching because Koenning is not a General Motors SUV expert. I don’t know how much each differs. The MSRP on a 2008 Escalade is between $55,000 and $60,000. The MSRP for a 2008 GMC Envoy is $30,000-$35,000 (I had to look these figures up because I am not a car expert either). The way I see it, Koenning made a $30,000 mistake but it seems like he is paying extra for it.
Is Alabama a little overly sensitive about joking about car buying for football players? I can’t understand why? Maybe if they hadn’t been through so many NCAA investigations then they would not be so sensitive.
People or groups get stereotyped for a reason and the reputation follows you around for a little while. That is just how it is. I am sorry but get over it Alabama. You know, if you had not had the reputation of cheating in the past then maybe the joke would not have hurt as much. Stay clean for more than a decade and then the jokes will subside. Until then, part of the time you have to serve deals with jokes about your problems. Sorry. I did not write the rules but that is just how it works. The next time a Gamecock gets arrested then their fans will have to hear the jokes.
I have mentioned this many times but it is appropriate to repeat it as it pertains to this topic but words are not offensive. Words or opinions are only that. What someone says cannot be offensive. People say what they say but other have a choice to be offended or not to be offended. You can be called every name in the book and every stereotype that fits your situation can be slung your way but it is still your choice to be offended or not. I just wish we did not live in a world where every time anyone says anything it can be taken as so offensive.
Break out the eggshells. Lets tap dance around every subject from now on. Be careful. You may hurt someone’s feelings. Boo Freakin' Woo.
This entire episode is childish. It was a joke. It was not even a good joke. It was not totally false either because we now know one of the kids actually did get into a high-priced new SUV. I don’t think rental companies hand out old vehicles and it probably looked nice and shiny in the high school parking lot. Isn’t that what the kid wanted when he rented it?
A prospect that signs with Alabama gets into a shiny new SUV at his high school and Koenning jokes about it. Wow. Big freakin’ deal! Bad jokes are bad jokes but they are not major news stories.
In a pre-emptive strike let me apologize to the following: white people, black people, Asian people, Hispanic people, tall people, short people, fat people, skinny people, men, women, children, soccer fans, South Korean LPGA tour players, Democrats, Republicans, Libertarians, blondes, brunettes, red-heads, bald people, ugly people, pretty people, Tigers, Gamecocks, Bulldogs, Seminoles, Tar Heels, Duke co-eds, Roger Clemens, Mexican soccer fans, Arabs, Muslims, Christians, Jews, Catholics, Protestants, Baptists, Methodist, Presbyterians, Jehovah Witnesses, fast food workers, construction workers, lawyers, Irish, politicians, gays, lesbians, Native Americans, Michael Jackson, Wal-Mart greeters, SEC fans, ACC fans, BCS commissioners, academia, alcoholics, drug addicts, Barbara Streisand, Nancy Grace, Celine Deion, Kenny Chesney, weather men, Red Sox fans, Braves fans, WNBA players, Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, Bart Wright, Germans, Chuck Amato, Al Groh, Cliff Ellis, Rick Barnes, Lou Holtz, ESPN, Obama, McCain, Hillary, Bill, Monica, Brittney Spears, Lindsey Lohan, MTV, Kevin Costner, the AARC, Holly Rowe, Rosie, John Kruk, Lance Armstrong, Lee Corso, Curt Schilling, Barry Bonds, basketball referees and anyone else who may subject themselves to a little comment in the future. I may not be funny but I am not a mean person with malicious intent. My jokes are only meant as that. The sooner you understand, the less problems we will have in the future.
BTW-Have you heard the one about the fat, big headed, double chinned, white, Irish blog writer on Tigernet who can’t type and has bad grammar?

Football, anyone?
Posted by Zeus on August 27, 2008 at 12:09 PM EDT #
Yeah, what about football? We have a game on Saturday and I should be reading Mickey's blog about the Clemson D vs. Bama's O (including the 3 first name quarterback). Instead, I have to read about some irrelevent crap that Vic said...OVER IT!!!

Without the type of internet chatter that is spurred by people picking at comments like those Koenning made, folks like you probably wouldn't have the job you have. Its the crazies that help generate interest and readership that generates fodder for blogs and talk radio.

Alans24,
I agree. I have already written the Clemson defense vs Alabama offense blog that will be posted Thursday. Because we got pushed back a day on this subject, I may can a blog planned on future series with SEC teams and the idea of more neutral site games. I need for Saturday to get here so we can really have something to review.

I'm mad at Koenning for making those comments because I was REALLY looking forward to Mickey's analysis of Clemson's D vs Alabama's O. What a waste of time.

Who has a internet site and a sports talk show? Who talked about it on their internet site and their sports talk show? LOL! Mickey, why do you make Clemson look so bad?! Let it go!

I appreciate the clarification.
But, I would have preferred that it take only 1 small paragraph and to read the regularly scheduled blog.
I agree, in life we must have fun and a joke is a joke. Lets move on.

There is one line in your blog that is absolutely true...."it was a stupid statement and problably should not have been made..."
Why on earth would he say that during game week?

Good stuff. I could tell you the secret of communicating without offending anyone, but I'd have to kill you. Thanks.
