Hello Mickey:
I think the only thing you discussed in "Potential Position Changes" that concerned me was the issue of the tight end, which I highlighted below. I think a major weakness of our offense is that we are not truly a balanced, multidimensional offense. The fact that we don't throw to the TE very often means that the defense has one less thing to worry about. We know Taylor can catch (usually), moving Taylor to TE makes sense to me because we won't lose the ability to block at the TE position and we know that he can catch the ball. If we find a receiver to replace him on the offense, then we now have one more thing for the defense to think about. Maybe those bubble screens will work if the defense has to cover the TE. Like the Blog; if you keep writing then I'll keep reading!
Kirk
Kirk,
I am not sure we can assume that Taylor would be a great blocker at tight end. There is a big difference between blocking in open space as a wide out on a corner or safety and blocking in close quarters on a defensive end or linebacker. I think he is a weapon as a receiver and would be a terrific receiving tight end but I am not sure he is ready for 275-pound defensive ends. Also, I think Taylor is too valuable as a blocker on the perimeter.
Mickey,
On your comments on the radio about Mattes and NC State, I did some wins and losses comparison with Clemson. Over the last 20 years. It looks to me like Clemson is 13-7 versus the pack. If I take 20 years ending in 2003 (Drop the current 4 year winning streak) Clemson was 11-9 against us over that period.
Clemson is 23-17 over the last 40 years.
I am sure Clemson was favored in almost every game from the Danny Ford era on.
Since Clemson is always thinking National title, the Pack has been a thorn in their side 7 of the last 20 years. Correct me if I am wrong but Florida State lost to us and shared a national title. Clemson probably want be able to pull that off. Based on the last 20 years Clemson has beat us 65% of the time. I am not happy with that but I bet Clemson isn’t either. It is not the dominance you claim and our football team is nothing special.
Coach O’Brien is having a good recruiting year. We are excited about the future.
I think Clemson should dominate the ACC next year. The Talent is through the roof. In my opinion the best since 91. Just be careful when the Pack comes to town.
Mike
Mike,
Thanks for the e-mail. NC State is not a bad program and has played pretty good against Clemson in recent years. However, in my biased opinion, Clemson is the better program and should have higher expectations. NC State should be better than Clemson in basketball and should have higher expectations. They have two national titles in basketball and State is still a basketball school. In my opinion Clemson should not get highly rated basketball players that come down to NC State and Clemson and the Wolfpack should not get highly rated football players that comes down to Clemson and NC State.
Mickey,
I know this is a wild question but if I was Tommy Bowden I would ask James Mays to play football in the Fall if 2008…
Before you laugh…Antonio Gates never played a down of college football…he is 6’ 4” and averaged 20 points and 7 rebounds per game in D1 basketball…Tony Gonzalez played football and basketball at Cal…both of these players are All Pro caliber pass catchers in the NFL and excelled at basketball in college.
I could see James Mays be a great tight end or wide out for the Tigers in football…after four years of basketball isn’t he allowed one additional year for a different sport?
What are your thoughts?
Dean
Dean,
Mays would have a year of eligibility left if he decided to play football. However, I think he would get killed on the gridiron. I don’t think Mays has the mass or toughness to get on the football field. He is longer than those two NFL tight ends but he does not have the upper body strength of Gonzalez or Gates. DaQuan Bowers would be licking his chops at a chance to go up against a player in Mays’ body style. I personally think it would not be a natural transition.
Mickey:
I was also concerned with the penetration by Smith in the Wake Forest game last night. He did the same thing repeatedly and we did not seem to make an adjustment other than putting a new defender on him. Quick is quick and he was quick, but actually quite predictable. He literally did the same thing -- He would dribble, fake left, then go to his right every time. No one was waiting to help out when he cut back to his right. Hmmmmmm?
I am not an expert, but is Wake Forest a big time outside shooting team? Their penetration suggests not. So, If not, then why not throw them off with a little zone to clog the middle? ..... just a thought..... especially when no one on the team was able to cover the Wake Forest guard in our man-to-man. Thanks for the Blog!
Kirk
Kirk,
Smith went to his right exclusively. I agree and think the Tigers went for the fake too often. I would have been content to let the Wake Forest guards try to beat you with their outside shooting game.
Mickey,
I read your Wednesday blog about the basketball team and wanted to offer some additional observations about this team.
1. Quick guards give our team fits, not just in breaking down our press but also in exploiting our half-court defense. You alluded to Maryland last year, and I can certainly remember all of the layups they got taking it right to the hole (like Smith did for WF). Our guys seem to play a sound jump switch man defense 25 feet out, but their help down low on penetration is definitely lacking. I actually saw Oglesby run away from the penetration when Hammonds was beaten by Smith. His man was 18 feet out on the right side, so I still don't know what that was about.
2. Our perimeter guys struggle against teams that play a tight man. I said before we played UNC or Duke that I thought we matched up better against UNC than Duke because of the smothering D that K's teams typically play. We're getting better in our recruiting, but we still don't have the talent to force most teams out of man. Rivers has been the one who consistently can make his own plays, but Hammonds has gotten much better exploding to the bucket. Stitt is further along than I thought he'd be in penetration, but this is not Oglesby's game, as could be seen by his TO's when dribbling into triple teams down low.
In my opinion, other than FT shooting, these are the two things that challenge us most. I'm looking forward to my first game in LJ since a mid 90's Duke game. My wife and I are spending the weekend in Tigertown for the BC game. I make all the home football games and some of the away games. I also try to make it to one weekend baseball series a year. I had been saying for years that I needed to make a basketball game and finally pulled the trigger this year. It's amazing what a little downtown shopping and the Martin Inn can do to influence the wife! :)
PawBoy
PawBoy,
I hope you guys will enjoy your visit in a couple of weeks. Clemson has to do something about the points in the paint issue. If not, this may be another disappointment. I think this team needs to make a few adjustments on both sides.
Mickey,
Terrence Oglesby is without a doubt a terrific 3 point shooter, but I do have one knock on the guy. He cannot create his own shot. All to often I see him just standing outside the 3 point line clapping for the ball. I know he is only a freshman, so hopefully he will learn how to work himself open more often. The infamous JJ Reddick was able to do this by moving without the ball. Plus Reddick had some help in the form of off-the-ball screens.
Another thing, Oglesby needs a better nickname than "TO". There's only one TO in sports...thankfully. How about Ogie?
James
James,
For a player to have only one weakness is a nice problem. J.J. Reddick could not create his own shot until his senior season. I actually think Oglesby is much better at crating that Reddick was at this stage. In my opinion, Oglesby’s major weakness is defense at this point but he more than makes up for it on the offensive end. He is also a terrific passer. Clemson would have won two of their three ACC wins so far this season without Oglesby.
I agree on the TO thing. To me when I hear TO I want to cringe. The original TO is such a punk that it would make me want to think of another nickname for Oglesby.
Mickey,
I try to watch OP during the games, and notice that he rarely loses his cool, at least in an outwardly way. It seems that he never gets on the officials like most coaches do. I would love to see him light into the officials on occasion. Do you think that the reason behind this, is that it is not his way. Or, do you think that with all of the "Lovey Dovey Good Sportsmanship" stuff that we keep hearing, has something to do with. In other words, has he been told not to do those things?
Thanks,
Chris
Chris,
Coach Purnell knew he had a difficult job in rebuilding the program. He and his staff have decided to be very positive with the players throughout this development. Sometimes I wish he would be a little more emotional but you have to be yourself and he is a calm coach. I understand the strategy.
Mickey,
I know you've been asked this a million times since last Friday, but with JD returning, does this mean Clemson will be a tougher sell for Jamie Harper?
Also, simply put: our women's BB program is a bad as it's ever been. The program is broken. Is TDP going to stay with the current coaching staff? Losing to Western Carolina, losing by 64 to Maryland and scoring 9 points in the first half against FSU is inexcusable.
Rick
Rick,
I don’t think we will know the effect on Harper until he signs. If he signs with Clemson he will say it had no effect or he wanted to play with James. If he goes to Illinois or FSU, FL or Miami then it might have been a factor. Hindsight is the only way we will know because at this time Harper is not revealing his cards.
The women’s basketball program is in shambles but I don’t see Clemson making a move this season. Nine freakin first half points….
Mickey,
I hope this turns out to be wrong, but you can't spell ClemsoN TIgers without the letters NIT. 7-9 or 8-8 in the ACC will get us a very high seed in the NIT, our yearly destination. Our Tigers just can't seem to cross over the hump!
David
David,
Ouch. I hope you are wrong as well. It seems to be the case so often but Sunday is a huge game.
Mickey,
First I want to say that as a life-long Clemson fan now living in Oklahoma, I truly enjoy your blogs and the website.
As I sit here watching the Tigers implode against Duke, I can’t believe that an NCAA team could actually be shooting at 42% on free throws with 5 minutes left in the game. I think Coach Purnell has done a great job and has some of the best talent that Clemson has had in years. But how can a team be consistently one of the worst free throw shooting teams in the country? The bad passes and poor free throw shooting tonight has cost them the chance at this game. At some point the coaching staff has to be held accountable for a team having so many bad passes and horrid free throws.
Just my thoughts and frustrations as I watch them loose another game to a highly ranked team.
Thanks,
Alan
Alan,
Thanks for writing in. The free throw issue has turned into a disease. It has become so mental. Look at how a player’s free throw shooting continues to get worse as his career goes on and you will see how mental this thing has become. I think they need to go and hire a free throw shooting specialist like FSU did. It worked for the Seminoles.
Hey Mickey,
I appreciate all your insight on recruiting. And like to thank you for keeping all us tiger fans up to date. Mickey I was just wondering if we don’t get Jamie Harper who are the other running backs left on our board. Thanks.
Travis
Travis,
Thanks. No, Clemson has cut its board at running back. They were looking at a couple of guys but I think they re so limited in scholarships that they could not take a fall back guy now. If Harper goes elsewhere, look for the running back recruiting to be the major focus on the national scene next year.

theres a huge possibility that we will lose both spiller and davis next year. if we don't get harper, then we will have major issues in 2009, basically starting a RB with very limited or no playing time.

Mickey --- Re: NC State basketball. The Pack has made some fairly significant misreads in recruiting lately that have lead to Clemson getting not only James Mays from the Pack's backyard, but Demontez Stitt, the most recent Mr. Basketball in North Carolina. Looking at their current PG situation, it is hard to understand how they would not even recruit Stitt. And I bet they wish they'd have gone after Mays.
