Friday E-Mail Bag

Friday E-Mail Bag
Each Friday I publish your comments and answer your questions. To submit a comment or questions please e-mail me at mickeyplyler@hotmail.com.

Mickey,

First off, I'd like to say that I enjoy the blog very much and I'm glad to hear that Ryan is doing better.

Have you ever noticed that in the NCAA Football series, that almost every school's playbook has option plays, but only a few teams run the option in real life.

I guess my question is this...do teams run the option in practice, but never use it? Or do you think the developers just put it in the game for those of us who love the option?

Thanks,

Andrew

Andrew,
There are very few true option teams in college football anymore but a big percentage of the teams can feature a little option. The option is extremely difficult to prepare for and it causes defensive coordinators to make sure their defenses are assignment based. Some offenses show just enough option to make defensive coordinators have to prepare for it in practice that week.

More teams are running the zone read option like Texas did with Vince Young and West Virginia has done with Pat White. This is not a true, old fashioned option like we grew up with. The triple option, speed option, freeze option and veer were examples that were more prevalent back in the 70s and 80s. Today the zone read has taken the place of the old option game.

The developers of the game do a pretty good job of matching offensive styles to each team. BTW-July 15 is the release date of NCAA 2009 and I can't wait.

Mickey,

I have yet to see anything on DeAndre McDaniel's status as a Clemson student/athlete. Obviously it's the summer, and he was only arrested a short time ago, but I'm surprised Coach Bowden and the Clemson administration has done nothing about this. When I was at Clemson, I had two friends suspended for a semester for off-campus fights involving Clemson students. The administration took swift action with both students, not waiting for due process. Obviously, it's a shame that this situation transpired as I think we all were expecting great things out of McDaniel this year. Nonetheless, Coach Bowden needs to step up to the plate and make some sort of public comment. The one biggest knock my Big Ten grad friends have on southern football is the coaching staff's hesitating to dismiss players. A coach like Kirk Ferentz would've dismissed McDaniel already, there's no doubt about that. Any thoughts?

Jason

Jason,
Thanks for the e-mail and I answered it on the radio show as well but wanted to answer it here. Let me first say that if McDaniel is guilty of what he is being accused of then I think he sound be kicked out of school and put in jail for the maximum sentence. Spousal abuse or domestic violence is a terrible crime and I always feel for the victims.

However, some close to the situation say he is not guilty. What if he is telling the truth? Due process is a good thing and thank goodness we are innocent until proven guilty in our country.

The judicial system will work in this case. The case will be settled in time and we will find out the truth.

I trust that Tommy Bowden and Terry Don Phillips do not want a player who physically beat up a women to represent Clemson on the football field. So if he is guilty of what he is accused of then he will be gone. However, if he is not guilty then why suspend him now? It is the summer time and everything they do is voluntary anyway. So let's let the system take care of this in due time. I think that is only fair to both the alleged victim and the alleged accused.

Mickey,
A friend of mine told me about your son and he told me about your blog as a way to keep up with his progress. I am not a Clemson fan and don't know you or Ryan. However, I have been drawn to this story and will follow it through until he completely recovers. My question is about Ryan. What does he enjoy doing? What were his hobbies and interests? Thanks for the updates.

Charles

Charles,

Thanks for the interest and the terrific question. Ryan is a great kid! He is 16 years old and will turn 17 on August 16. He is 6'3" and about 170 pounds. Ryan has dark brown hair and green eyes. He is a great looking young man according to the women in our family and his female friends at school.

Ryan just finished his sophomore year at Daniel High School in Clemson. He made A's and B's again this year. He likes science more than math or English. He excelled in the Daniel High School Junior ROTC program the past two years under the guidance of Col. Alton Whitley.

Ryan loves sports but basketball is by far his favorite. He plays basketball almost every day. When Ryan is not at the rec center, he is in our driveway shooting hoops. He has played AAU basketball during the summer and this past year he played for the Daniel High School JV team.

He is a big Clemson fan especially football, basketball and baseball. He loves going to all Clemson sporting events and you may have seen him at volleyball matches, indoor track meets or soccer games but he usually does not miss too many big baseball games. He would never miss a Clemson football or basketball game. Some of my best memories are our trips with him to Clemson road games in Boston, Durham, Winston-Salem, Atlanta or Columbia.

Ryan loves the New York Yankees and we have gone each of the past two years to Yankee Stadium. Every night after dinner, Ryan and I watch the Yankees together.

His friends will tell you that he is a funny kid with energy and pleasant personality. He is a tender hearted kid that will not step on ants or spiders because he has compassion for all animals. Ryan loves his dog, Daisy and his cats, Tyler and Princess.

Like most teenagers, Ryan loves chatting with his friends online and with text messages. Unlike some his age, he is pretty meticulous about his hygiene especially his teeth. He is a typical teenager in that he loves to sleep. Like many teenage boys he loves to eat. You may have seen him at his favorite restaurants in town like Dyers, Mac's, the Esso or Sardi's.

Ryan enjoys driving and actually had become a very good driver in recent weeks.

Ryan is extremely close to his mother and loves his sister.

Sons are blessings. But God, for some reason, gave me the best son anyone could ever ask for.
